Accra: Two Ghanaian soldiers have been critically injured following a missile attack on a Ghanaian battalion position serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The attack occurred in southern Lebanon amid ongoing hostilities between the Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed that the battalion headquarters in Lebanon was struck by two missiles between 1745 and 1752 hours local time on Friday. The attack left two soldiers critically injured and another traumatised. The Officers' Mess facility at the location was also hit and completely burnt down.
The injured soldiers are currently receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are reported to be in stable condition. Arrangements are underway to evacuate them to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further medical care.
The GAF assured the public that troops deployed in the mission area are safe and have taken shelter in underground bunkers due to the fragile security situation. Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has formally protested the incident at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, urging all parties involved in the conflict to ensure the safety of peacekeepers in the area.
