Accra: The Director-General of the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), Dr Eric Asuman, has addressed misconceptions regarding the agency's operations, asserting GMet's crucial role in national development, despite having physical offices in only 10 of Ghana's 16 regions. Speaking on the theme 'Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow,' at the launch of 2026 Meteorological Awareness Month, Dr Asuman highlighted the need to enhance the agency's infrastructure to ensure comprehensive weather services.
According to Ghana Web, Dr Asuman stressed that accurate weather forecasting depends on the equitable distribution of appropriate equipment and infrastructure across the country. He clarified that GMet's current structure mirrors the former 10-region arrangement of Ghana, before the addition of six new regions, which has led to misunderstandings about regional coverage.
Dr Asuman elaborated that regions like Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo are served by the Sunyani office, reflecting the traditional regional divisions. Similarly, the Tamale office caters to the Northern Region as well as Savannah and other newly formed regions. He assured that the agency's forecasts are nationwide, with data dissemination not restricted to regions where offices are located.
He urged stakeholders and the public to support efforts to raise meteorological awareness and enhance GMet's ability to provide timely and reliable weather information across Ghana.
