Bui: The Bui Tennis Club (BTC) of the Bui Power Authority (BPA), which manages the Bui Generating Station (BGS), is collaborating with the Ghana Tennis Federation to identify and nurture the talents of young individuals in the Savannah Region's dam enclave.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Wumbila Salifu, Chairman of the BTC, stated that the club, inaugurated two years ago with 43 members from the BPA, is a member of the Ghana Tennis Federation. The club has identified and, with support from the GTF, is nurturing the prospects of 15 youngsters in the Jama community within the dam's enclave in the Bole-Bamboi District. This initiative is part of the club's social responsibility to enhance the socio-economic livelihoods of the rural residents around the dam.
Mr. Salifu revealed that a scholarship had been provided to one of the youngsters, who is now attending the Bui Academy. He pledged the club's commitment to further support and uplift the young people in the dam's vicinity. Additionally, Mr. Salifu, who is also the Director of Estate at the BPA, mentioned that the club aims to foster recreation and socialization, while strengthening the relationships among BPA personnel, both on-site and in Accra.
Mr. Salifu explained that the BTC organized a tennis competition in honor of the retired Warrant Officer (WO) Adjei Adjetey, the club's coach who was instrumental in its formation. With WO Adjetey heading for retirement from active service at the BPA, the club expressed gratitude for his contributions to its development.
Mr. Duah Isaac Aboagye, President of the Ghana Tennis Federation, praised the BTC for its essential role in promoting the sport. He highlighted the potential for uncovering and nurturing tennis talents in the Savannah Region, affirming the federation's support for the club. Mr. Aboagye also encouraged tennis clubs across the country to utilize social media to showcase their potential, emphasizing the availability of international scholarships for players.
Mr. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, the Upper West Regional Minister, remarked on the evolving role of sports beyond entertainment and urged for greater efforts to advance tennis development nationwide.
During the competition, Mr. Joseph Konnuba, the BTC's Organiser, mentioned that technical discussions would be conducted to advance tennis growth in the Bui/Jama enclave. Trophies and media were presented to the Techiman Holy Family Tennis Club, the Techiman Tennis Club, and the Wa Tennis Club for participating in the two-day event, which was attended by Tactical Air Command (TAC), Bui, and Mr. Kwabena Kissiedu Atiemo.
