Tanzanian Delegation Visits Ghana’s GoldBod to Study Gold Sector Practices

Accra: A 15-member delegation from the Tanzanian Minerals Commission visited the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) to gain insights into Ghana's operations and regulatory framework in the gold sector. This study visit, held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, was part of Tanzania's efforts to modernize its mineral management practices.

According to Ghana Web, the delegation aimed to understand Ghana's gold-buying system and regulatory regime. Dr. Theresia Numbi, the leader of the delegation, stated that Ghana was chosen after a comparative assessment of countries for its pioneering role and excellence in Africa's gold sector. The visit was intended to allow both parties to share experiences and best practices.

The delegation was welcomed by Richard Nunekpeku, Esq., the Deputy Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, who provided an overview of the Board's mandate and operations. He thanked the delegation for selecting Ghana for this learning and experience-sharing opportunity. Nunekpeku explained that GoldBod, established through an Act of Parliament, operates under the Ghana Gold Board Act, 2025 (Act 1140), with core mandates including supporting reserve accumulation and generating foreign exchange for the country.

The Deputy CEO highlighted the formalization efforts of GoldBod, noting that licensing for gold buying, refining, and jewelry fabrication had been restricted to Ghanaians. He discussed the challenges and successes of formalizing an historically informal sector and outlined the four main licensing categories available under Ghana's framework.

Members of the Tanzanian delegation engaged in discussions about GoldBod's corporate social responsibility initiatives, foreign financing of mining activities, pricing mechanisms, and royalty payments. Nunekpeku responded by sharing Ghana's experiences and strategies to address sector challenges.

The delegation expressed satisfaction with the engagement and commended GoldBod for its openness and depth of engagement. Officials present at the meeting included Dr. James German, Director for Mining Operations; Professor Ishmael Quaicoe, Director for Environmental Sustainability Goals; and Dr. Ernest Odei, Director for Corporate Affairs.
