Sandema: The Sandema Hospital in the Builsa North Municipality successfully delivered preterm twins on New Year Day. Dr Edwin Saanwie, the Medical Superintendent of the Hospital, revealed this in a conversation with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sandema. He confirmed that the deliveries were successful, and both the babies and their mother were in stable conditions, receiving close monitoring. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr Saanwie stated that the twins, a male and a female, were delivered by midwives at the facility at 0103 and 0110 hours, respectively, at 34 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy. Each twin weighed 2.2 kilograms (Kg) at birth. Although a normal pregnancy typically lasts 38 weeks, the delivery was successful, and both the mother and babies were doing well. During the interview with GNA regarding the preterm deliveries, Dr Saanwie had to abruptly pause the discussion to perform an emergency Caesarean Section (CS) at the hospital due to a delayed second stage of labor with fetal distress. Post-p rocedure, he informed GNA, "We performed an emergency CS and extracted a live female baby with a good Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity and Respiration (APGAR) score." This indicated that the baby was able to cry and respond well within the first and fifth minutes of delivery. The CS female baby was delivered at 1224 hours, weighing 3.1 kg, bringing the total number of deliveries on New Year Day to three. "Babies are fine and their mothers are also fine," stated Dr Saanwie. He urged women who miss their menstrual periods to visit health facilities promptly to begin Antenatal Care (ANC) services. "The moment you miss your period as a woman within your reproductive age, report to any health facility and start ANC," he advised. Dr Saanwie also cautioned expectant mothers against using Over The Counter medicines, emphasizing the importance of visiting health facilities for proper healthcare services. "Every pregnant woman should take their routine medications. They should adhere to education on nutrition and having enough rest," he advised. He expressed gratitude to the management and staff of the Hospital for their achievements in 2025, encouraging them to continue contributing to quality healthcare delivery in the facility, and wished them well for the New Year. The mother of the preterm twins, speaking to GNA, thanked God for the successful deliveries on the first day of the year and expressed her appreciation to the staff and management of the Hospital for their hard work.
