Kumasi: MTN Ghana has joined the global observance of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence with a series of sensitisation programmes aimed at empowering schoolchildren with knowledge on gender equality and non-violence.
According to Ghana News Agency, the MTN Ghana Foundation engaged pupils of the New Asafo Basic and Junior High School in Kumasi, educating students on the importance of rejecting all forms of abuse, particularly gender-based violence. Mr. George Kyei Frimpong, Education Portfolio Advisor for the MTN Ghana Foundation, highlighted that this campaign is part of MTN's broader strategy initiated in 2024 to foster safer communities across Africa.
Frimpong emphasized that the annual 16-day campaign, held in November, offers a vital opportunity to impart messages of respect, equality, and the importance of reporting violence to young people. He underscored the significance of early sensitisation in helping children develop values that oppose domestic violence and abuse.
This year's initiatives are heavily focused on schools nationwide, with outreach teams visiting selected schools in Kumasi, Koforidua, the northern sector, and other regions, culminating at the Sacred Heart School in Accra. At New Asafo, MTN organised a debate on the topic: 'Teaching Boys and Girls the Same Content Will Prevent Violence.' The girls' team emerged victorious and received MTN-branded souvenirs.
In addition, the MTN Ghana Foundation donated tablets and ICT equipment to enhance the school's computer laboratory, supporting digital learning. School authorities expressed their gratitude to MTN for prioritising children's welfare and education, describing the initiative as both timely and impactful.
Mr. Frimpong reaffirmed MTN's commitment to championing gender equality and protecting vulnerable groups through continuous advocacy. He stated, 'MTN stands firmly against all forms of gender-based violence. We will continue to use our platforms to promote safe spaces, respectful relationships, and equal opportunities for all.'
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is a United Nations-backed global movement held annually from November 25 to December 10 to raise awareness and galvanize action to end violence against women, girls, and vulnerable groups.
