Parliament Approves GHS4.7 Billion for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs

Accra: Parliament has approved a GHS 4.7 billion estimate for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2026. The allocation is set to enhance the Ministry's efforts in promoting decentralisation, addressing chieftaincy matters, and managing religious affairs, which are critical for maintaining peace, harmony, and national cohesion.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Sector Minister, welcomed the approval during Wednesday's sitting. He noted that the funds would enable the Ministry to strengthen local governance structures, resolve traditional leadership disputes, and foster interfaith dialogue nationwide. Mr. Ibrahim stated, "This investment underscores government's commitment to building strong local institutions, preserving our cultural heritage, and ensuring religious harmony."

The Ministry has a central role in coordinating policies that empower local assemblies, mediate chieftaincy conflicts, and promote peaceful coexistence among various religious groups. Lawmakers highlighted that the approved estimates will advance Ghana's decentralisation agenda while safeguarding traditions and values that unite communities.
