Accra: The National Democratic Congress Majority Caucus in Parliament has refuted allegations that Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, a former Finance Minister, is seeking medical treatment abroad to avoid prosecution for alleged corruption. The Caucus maintains that the claims are unfounded and dismisses any notion that Mr. Ofori-Atta is attempting to evade justice. According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader, emphasized that while Mr. Ofori-Atta's health issues were evident during his tenure, he continued to fulfill his ministerial responsibilities under the previous administration. Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Ayariga countered the assertions made by the New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus, stating that it is inaccurate to suggest that the former minister is now seeking medical care as a means of avoidance. Mr. Ayariga further clarified that the discussion around Mr. Ofori-Atta's health has only emerged because he is required to answer questions regarding his time in office. He addressed the Speaker, remarking that the Majority Caucus is not insensitive to Mr. Ofori-Atta's medical condition, recalling the period when his health was visibly compromised but he remained active as Finance Minister. The debate was prompted by Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim, the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Religious Affairs, who reminded Parliament of a prior assurance by Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, that Mr. Ofori-Atta would return to Ghana by February 18. Mr. Ibrahim sought clarification on the former minister's current whereabouts, questioning why he had yet to return. Responding to these inquiries, Mr. Afenyo-Markin denied misleading Parliament. He explained that Mr. Ofori-Atta had communicated his medical status and travel plans to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) through his legal representatives. Mr. Afenyo-Markin noted that Mr. Ofori-Atta had been scheduled for surgery and, following medical advice, was granted additional recovery time, which delayed his return. Mr. Afenyo-Markin urged his colleagues to show empathy towards Mr. Ofori-Atta's situation, highlighting the potential vulnerability of anyone facing serious health issues. He criticized the politicization of the matter, reminding Parliament that health challenges can affect anyone and should not be used as a tool for political gain.
