NDC MP Defends Government’s Plan to Acquire Presidential Jets

Accra: Mr James Agalga, the NDC Member of Parliament for Builsa North, has defended the Mahama-led Government's plan to acquire presidential jets, describing it as a futuristic move aimed at national benefit rather than providing luxury for the President. During the debate on the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of Government, Mr Agalga emphasized that the procurement process for such aircrafts would span approximately four years.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Agalga argued that the acquisition's purpose extended beyond the current administration's tenure, focusing on long-term national interests. He recalled how the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had proposed purchasing six fighter jets for the Ghana Armed Forces, a proposal that received backing from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) while in opposition. However, the transaction was hindered by complications with the loan facility meant to fund the purchase.

Mr. Agalga urged the NPP Minority Caucus to refrain from criticizing the current NDC government for pursuing the acquisition, highlighting that the plan aligns with national security and strategic objectives. Earlier in the discussion, Reverend John Ntim Fourdjour, the NPP MP for Assin South, condemned the government's decision to acquire presidential jets, labeling it a misplaced priority amidst economic challenges.

The NPP Minority Caucus earlier accused the government of planning to allocate GHS 13.1 billion for four helicopters and two presidential jets, arguing that this decision demonstrates insensitivity to the existing economic difficulties.
