Accra: Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has been appointed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union's (IPU) Task Force on the peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine. The appointment was made by the IPU President and reflects Mr Bagbin's integrity, impartiality, and proven ability to build trust among conflicting parties.
According to Ghana News Agency, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong expressed confidence in Mr Bagbin's leadership and experience, which are expected to enhance the work and impact of the Task Force. In a letter confirming the appointment, Chungong stated that the Task Force's mission is to support diplomatic efforts in seeking a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine.
A statement issued by Mr David Sebastian Damoah, Director of Media Relations, Parliament, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, confirmed the appointment on Thursday. It highlighted that as a seasoned international peace negotiator, Speaker Bagbin will participate in hearings and discussions with Ukrainian and Russian delegations and engage government leaders from both countries.
The statement further noted that Mr Bagbin's involvement is expected to strengthen the Task Force's efforts to promote dialogue and seek a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict. The IPU Task Force, established in March 2022, serves as an ad hoc body to provide a platform for dialogue between Ukrainian and Russian parliamentarians.
Since its inception, the Task Force has convened over 13 meetings, conducted a mission to Kyiv and Moscow in July 2022, and held biannual consultations during IPU Assemblies. Speaker Bagbin's appointment underscores Ghana's active role in supporting global diplomatic initiatives and fostering international peace. His leadership and experience are anticipated to make a significant impact on the Task Force's efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
