Accra: Mr Mahama Ayariga, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has assured Ghanaians that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will not treat its executive arm with kid gloves. Speaking at the opening of the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, Mr Ayariga emphasised that the NDC majority would demand performance and delivery of promises made in the party’s manifesto.
According to Ghana News Agency, the NDC will hold the executive arm of government accountable on the delivery of its promises, Mr Ayariga stated on the Floor of Parliament. He emphasized that bipartisanship would be the hallmark of the NDC’s approach but warned that they would not hesitate to sound criticism when necessary.
Mr Ayariga, also the NDC Member of Parliament for Bawuku Central, highlighted the progress made by the government, citing the stabilisation of the economy, increased access to healthcare, and improved infrastructure. He underscored the need for job creation, particularly for the youth, and announced plans for a special parliamentary hearing on the extractive industries to explore job creation potential.
The Majority Leader repeatedly used the phrase ‘so far, so excellent’ to describe the government’s progress in various areas, including economic stability. He explained that the economy was rebounding, and Ghana was gaining economic respectability globally. He noted that the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) was on track to reach 20 million active members, with claims payments up to date, while the Big Push in road infrastructure was on course.
In addition, Mr Ayariga mentioned that ‘Free SHS is well-funded, and schools are functioning well.’ He also outlined a busy legislative agenda for the upcoming Meeting, which includes the consideration of several bills and regulations, such as the National Health Insurance Regulations, the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Regulations, and the Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill.
Parliament reconvened on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, for the Third Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, after it was adjourned sine die on Friday, August 1, 2025.
