ABIDJAN: Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has been elected as the next Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, a significant achievement hailed by Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns in Africa, as a triumph for Ghanaian diplomacy. According to Ghana News Agency, Dr. Chambas, speaking at an African Union retreat in Abidjan, praised Ms. Botchwey's election as a notable recognition of African women's capabilities. This appointment marks her as the first woman from the African continent and the second woman of color to hold this esteemed position. Dr. Chambas, who supported Ms. Botchwey's campaign efforts in the Caribbean and Pacific Island countries, expressed his delight at her success, emphasizing its significance for Ghana and Africa at large. Ms. Botchwey's election occurred during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Apia, Samoa, from October 21 to 26. She will succeed Baroness Patricia Scotland of the United Kingdom, who completes her tenure by the end of December 2024. Ms. Botchwey, a lawyer and diplomat with over a decade of experience at Ghana's Foreign Ministry, emerged victorious among three candidates, including Senator Joshua Setipa of Lesotho and Dr. Mamadou Tangara of the Gambia. In her post-election statement, Ms. Botchwey expressed humility and commitment to working towards a more inclusive Commonwealth. Her predecessor, Baroness Scotland, extended congratulations, expressing confidence in Ms. Botchwey's ability to serve the association effectively. Dr. Chambas highlighted Ms. Botchwey's dedication to addressing challenges such as climate change, youth needs, and institutional reform. Her campaign focused on enhancing democracy, strengthening Commonwealth values, and promoting trade, education, and climate advocacy, particularly for small island and developing states. The Commonwealth, an association headed by King Charles II, aims to promote democratic governance, trade coope ration, and transparency among its member states. Ms. Botchwey's leadership is expected to bring renewed focus on these objectives, benefiting the 2.7 billion people across its member countries.
