Total Woman Network sensitises girls on menstrual hygiene, management, teenage pregnancy, HIV

A dedicated non-governmental organization, Total Woman Network, is addressing menstrual hygiene and management, teenage pregnancy, and HIV awareness for adolescent girls. By providing sanitary pads and comprehensive HIV education, Total Woman Network is improving the health, dignity, and future prospects of young Ghanaian girls.

In many areas, menstruation is stigmatized and misunderstood, with a lack of access to hygienic menstrual products posing significant barriers to education and social participation. To combat this, the NGO dispatched free sanitary pads and toiletries to schools and underprivileged communities, promoting long-term menstrual hygiene and management. Total Woman Network also introduced ‘Pad Banks’ for sustainable period solutions in schools and communities.

In addition to menstrual hygiene, the NGO addressed teenage pregnancy and HIV awareness and prevention. Adolescents, especially girls, are vulnerable to HIV due to various factors. Total Woman Network’s HIV education program equipped
young people with accurate information about transmission, prevention, and treatment, collaborating with healthcare professionals to provide workshops on safe sex practices, testing, and antiretroviral therapy.

The Girl Pad Project, running for several years, seeks sponsors, partnerships, and collaborations. Integrating menstrual hygiene and management, teenage pregnancy prevention, and HIV sensitization into a cohesive framework, the Founder of Total Woman Network, Lady Edna Quartey, said, can enhance the effectiveness of interventions. Educating teenagers about abstinence and safe sex practices, she said, includes the use of condoms, regular testing, and the importance of antiretroviral therapy for those living with HIV, which can significantly reduce transmission rates.

Speaking on teenage health, Lady Edna and her team stated that adolescence is a critical period for physical development. She said proper personal hygiene and regular physical activity are essential for healthy growth and development.

Th
e educational workshops were held at several schools: Ndoda D/A JHS/Primary School in Nsawam, Danso D/A Anglican JHS and Primary School, and Tortibo Presby JHS/Primary School, all located in Nsawam in the Eastern Region, as well as the Teshie Camp 2 Cluster of Schools and the Teshie LEKMA Southern Cluster of Schools in the Greater Accra Region.

UG senior lecturer, two students busted over GH106,800 bed allocation scandal

Three individuals from the University of Ghana, including two students and a lecturer, have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on charges of conspiracy and defrauding by false pretences, involving GH106,800, according to campus-based univers.ug.edu.gh.

According to the news report, Joseph Appiah, 25, and Stephen Nimako Ansong, 24, both Level 400 students, along with Dr. Kwadwo Owusu Ayeh, 58, a Senior Hall Tutor, face multiple charges related to an alleged scam at Dr. Hilla Liman Hall.

Appiah and Ansong face additional charges of abetment of a criminal offence, specifically corruption involving public officers.

Dr. Ayeh is also charged with corruption by a public officer. All three defendants have pleaded not guilty.

The court presided over by Isaac Addo, has granted bail to each defendant set at GH100,000 with one surety each. The trial is scheduled to continue on July 30, 2024.

Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, representing the prosecution, informed the court that the case was initiated following
a petition from Professor Gordon Awandare, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana.

The petition, filed on October 17, 2023, accused certain university staff and students of soliciting and collecting money from other students under the guise of providing accommodation and beds at Dr. Hilla Liman Hall.

The following day, a team of detectives led by Chief Superintendent Emmanuel Osei-Agbogah began investigations.

They identified 32 students who had fallen victim to the scheme, confirming that Appiah and Ansong had collected between GH2,000 and GH2,500 from each, promising them accommodation that was never provided.

During interrogation, Appiah and Ansong are reported to have admitted to their involvement, revealing their collaboration with Dr. Ayeh.

The investigation is reported to have found that Dr. Ayeh conspired with Ansong to find students in need of accommodation, who then coordinated with Appiah to secure potential victims.

The accused reportedly collected a total of GH106,800 from 32 studen
ts. Of this amount, Ansong is reported to have refunded GH30,000.

Why NAPO is the wrong person to partner Bawumia – NPP MP

A New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North has asserted that his colleague MP for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), who has reportedly been chosen by the flagbearer of the party as running mate, is the wrong choice.

According to Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, NAPO, in his view, cannot deliver the necessary votes the party needs to win the 2024 general elections.

The MP, who made this assertion in an interview on JoyNews on Thursday, June 27, 2024, further indicated that his preferred candidate would be someone who can stand in for the party’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to campaign with MPs, and NAPO is not that person.

‘Well, I wouldn’t speak for the majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus for us to state our position. But me, Appiah-Kubi, you can solicit my view on that. If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him.

“It’s not my preference. Appiah-Kubi is saying that he is not my preference. But that doesn’t mean that he is
not qualified. If there was an opportunity like that, I would express a candidate, however acceptable otherwise, to our presidential candidate. I would want someone who will be open with the people on the ground, who will be able to deliver the votes, and who would also submit to the presidency, and who will also be important in bringing parliament closer to the executive.

He said, ‘I would probably select someone who is more acceptable to the generals going to war, the parliamentarians. We should find someone who, if the presidential candidate is not there, will hold the hand of a member of parliament and go and conduct a campaign in that member of parliament’s constituency. I don’t see that happening in this equation. He cannot hold my hand. So why would I say that I prefer him? He cannot hold my hand.’

About NAPO’s nomination

According to a report from myjoyonline.com, the NPP flagbearer presented NAPO as his running mate during a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House o
n Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

JoyNews’ Presidential Affairs correspondent, Elton Brobbey, stated that after the vice president presented his choice of running mate to President Akufo-Addo, the president offered advice and shared his thoughts before ultimately accepting Dr. Bawumia’s choice.

“He was first elected to Parliament on June 1, 2008, and successfully re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020. He has served on the Health, Appointment, and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

“In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as Education Minister, and he currently holds the position of Energy Minister. His name is Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO,” the journalist reported.

Ensure free and fair elections – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang tells EC

The Running Mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has urged the Electoral Commission to ensure that this year’s election is free, fair and transparent.

She said the just-ended limited registration and voter transfer exercises recorded pockets of violence across the country and it is imperative that the Electoral Commission puts measures in place to avoid repeating same in the upcoming general elections.

“Ghana’s democracy has over the years been the envy of many countries due to its nature of organising free and fair elections but the violence that is characterising our elections of late is very worrying,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said.

The NDC Running Mate said this when she paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Akyem Tafo, Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, as part of her one day tour of the Abuakwa North constituency in the Eastern Region.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged traditional leaders to have an interest in how Ghana’s electoral system is being managed and speak out when
the need arises in order to ensure violence-free elections.

She also entreated the EC to be a fair referee by putting in place the right

process without bias towards any political party.

For his part, the Chief of Akyem Tafo, Osabarima Adusei Peasah IV, said it would be a record for Ghana to get a woman as a Vice President, noting that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s exposure in academia help her to succeed as Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.

He also urged the EC to be fair in its dealings with all political parties to ensure free and fair elections.

Osabarima Adusei Piasah also bemoaned the collapse of the agricultural business in the area, especially the work of the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), and urged the next NDC administration to bring it back to life when the party wins the December 7 general elections.

Ghana’s path to peaceful polls: Lessons from Kenya’s recent unrest

As Ghana prepares for its December elections, the recent clashes in Kenya are a stark reminder of the importance of communicating with citizens transparently to maintain peace and stability.

The violence in Kenya, which resulted in loss of life and property, underscores the need for Ghana to learn from its neighbor’s experience and take proactive measures to understand the power of the citizens, especially the youths.

By learning from these past experiences, we can better prepare for the future.

Political tensions are already simmering globally, and Ghana is no exception.

Recent unrest over a controversial tax bill in Kenya has exacerbated them. The bill, aimed at increasing government revenue, has sparked widespread protests and discontent among citizens burdened by the additional financial pressure. These protests have turned violent, highlighting the urgent need for dialogue and engagement between the government and its citizens.

To avoid a situation similar to Kenya’s, the Ghanaian government, politi
cal parties, and civil society must prioritize dialogue, tolerance, and restraint. Deploying military personnel to support police operations, as seen in Kenya, should be considered a last resort. Instead, efforts should focus on de-escalation techniques and community engagement to address grievances and build trust.

Ghana has a longstanding reputation for democratic excellence in Africa, with a history of peaceful power transitions and robust electoral processes. Upholding this standard is essential and requires ensuring the safety of citizens, voters, and election officials. This involves maintaining law and order and fostering an environment where free and fair elections can occur without fear of violence or intimidation.

In conclusion, as Ghana heads to the polls, it is imperative for all of us to draw lessons from Kenya’s recent experience, with the will to hold leaders accountable and work collectively to maintain peace and stability. By addressing the underlying causes of unrest, such as economic grie
vances related to the tax bill, and promoting inclusive dialogue, we can all play a part in navigating Ghana’s current challenges and continuing to be a beacon of democracy in the region.
