Eid al-Adha: Mahama extends best wishes to Muslims

Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has extended best wishes to Muslims on the occasion of Eid- al-Adha. Mr Mahama, in a statement, which was made available to the Ghana News Agency said: ‘May this Eid bring you and your loved one’s joy, peace, and blessings’. He urged Moslems to take a moment to reflect yet again on this special occasion’s importance. He noted that it was a time to remember the sacrifice that Prophet Ibrahim was willing to make to demonstrate his faith and devotion to Allah (SWT). ‘During this holy month of Ramadan, we have all worked hard to deepen our connection with Allah through prayer, fasting, and acts of kindness,’ Mr Mahama stated. ‘As we come together to celebrate Eid-al-Adha, let us continue to embody these values and honour the spirit of sacrifice passed down to us from our ancestors.’

Eid-ul Adha Celebration: Veep extends best wishes to all Muslims

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has extended the warmest wishes to his fellow Muslims on the auspicious occasion of the Eid-ul Adha celebration. In a Facebook message to Muslims, Dr Bawumia urged all Muslims to be inspired by Ibrahim’s acts of selflessness by caring for each other. ‘Hajia Samira Bawumia and I extend our warmest wishes to fellow Muslims on the auspicious occasion of Eid-ul Adha. ‘As we observe the sacred festival of sacrifice, which is inspired by the motherly care of Hajar (Hagar) towards her son Ishmael, and Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) incredible obedience to God, let us be inspired by these acts of selflessness, by caring for each other, and also sacrificing for worthy causes for the betterment of our families, communities and the nation,’ the Vice President wrote. Eid Mubarak! Eid-ul Adha means the ‘Festival of Sacrifice’, which is observed annually by Muslims across the world. During this festival, Muslims sacrificed sheep, cows or camels to Allah in demonstration of Ibrahim’s obedience to Allah. The meats of the animals are shared amongst the family, friends and the needy.

Anthrax: Upper East Muslims restricted from sacrificing animals during Eid-ul Adha

Despite the partial lifting of the ban on the slaughtering and consumption of animals and meat, the Muslim community in the Upper East Region will not be sacrificing animals this year as part of the celebration of the Eid al-Adha. Sheikh Yussif Imam Umar, the Acting Regional Chief Imam, who made this known in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga, noted that, unlike previous celebrations where the ceremonial sacrifice of a ram would be made during the prayers that would not be done this year. This means Muslims in the region, who planned to sacrifice animals to mark the feast, would not be allowed to do so, adding that the move was to help contain the outbreak of the Anthrax disease in the region. He said although the ban had been partially lifted, it would not be appropriate to consume meat since the time of the vaccination had been recent and noted that the Muslims had been advised not to sacrifice animals during the festive season. For the past three weeks, the region has been battling with the outbreak of the disease, which had spread to more districts, killing one person and several animals. The situation compelled the Regional Public Health Emergency Committee to place restrictions on the movement, slaughtering and consumption of animals, particularly cattle and other small ruminants. But due to the celebration of the Eid- ul-Adha, the Committee in a statement, on June 26, 2023, partially lifted the ban on the slaughtering and consumption of animals and meat. The statement, however, indicated that only people who have had their animals vaccinated before June 20, 2023, could slaughter those animals under the strict supervision of veterinary officers at designated locations. But the Regional Chief Imam noted that slaughtering and consumption of meat during the festive celebration was not obligatory, and one would not be committing any crime when they failed to slaughter animals. ‘During the COVID-19 time, the Hajj which is the fifth pillar in Islam and obligatory that if you have money that can send you to Mecca you do so, otherwise on judgement day, you will account for it but it was still suspended for about two years, our mosques were asked to be closed,’ he said. He said Allah understood distressed situations and would not compel humanity to engage in activities detrimental to their lives. Sheikh Umar instead advised Muslims to share the money that would have been used to purchase the animals for sacrifice with the needy and vulnerable people, adding, that Allah would still bless them. ‘We made it clear to our Muslim community that whoever refuses and goes ahead to slaughter animals should consume the meat themselves at their homes and should not bring it to share with others and if someone gives you meat, do not collect it because it is not obligatory,’ he said. Sheikh Umar noted that the period of Eid ul-Adha reminded all Muslims to cultivate faith in Allah, patience, and honesty as they were essential for the development of humankind. Meanwhile, a visit to the Bolgatanga Municipal Abattoir showed that the facility was locked and there were no people or animals around.

Akufo-Addo’s ‘jail’ comment disappointing – Gyakye Quayson

Assin North MP-elect, James Gyakye Quayson has said President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s comment that he (Quayson) could end up in jail, was “disappointing”.

“I was a bit disappointed to hear that from a president who is a lawyer”, Mr Quayson told journalists after his re-election in Tuesday’s by-election.

He said, “the good people of Assin North have demonstrated that they have a conscience and they believe in me and I have a vision to execute”.

Mr. Quayson polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56 per cent of the total valid votes.

He beat his archrival Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who polled 12,630 votes representing 42.15 per cent of the total votes.

A third candidate, Bernice Enyonam Sefenu, of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), polled 87 votes (0.29%).

Crowning the NPP’s campaigning in the lead-up to the by-election, President Akufo-Addo told the constituents of Assin North: “It is crucial for us to exercise our voting rights responsibly,” adding: “We should not support or vote for individuals who are entangled in legal controversies that may eventually lead them to face imprisonment”.

“We need someone who can come and help you. Someone who will work in your interest. I heard Gyakye Quayson say that, ‘Even in prison, you people will vote for him’. Can he work from jail? We vote for people to go to parliament to work. How can he work from prison? So, don’t vote for someone who will end up in jail. Vote for someone who can work to improve your lives”, the president urged the Assin North voters.

The by-election was conducted after the Supreme Court declared Mr Quayson’s 2020 election victory as null and void with reason that he held Canadian citizenship in addition to his Ghanaian citizenship, as of the time of filing to run for office in the 2020 polls.

After his by-election victory, Mr Quayson said: “I stood for justice and development and I still haven’t swayed, and I will continue to pursue the same agenda because that is the mandate Assin North has given me and this is a victory not just for me but for the people of Ghana and hopefully, one day, we will pursue a good direction of justice and also to realise that politics is not about sharing money to people to get a vote.”

He noted: “Democracy is about development, and we are going to set this trend along to make sure that people who are represented get a fair share of the national cake and how to develop their communities”.
