Kohli eyes historic series victory for India over South Africa

Indian captain Virat Kohli has every reason to be confident his team can seal an historic Test series win in South Africa when they face the hosts in the second Test at the Wanderers Stadium on Monday.

“It’s a ground we all loving playing on and we are looking forward to it,” said Kohli after India won the first Test at Centurion by 113 runs on Thursday.

The numbers bear out Kohli’s optimism.

India have yet to be beaten in a Test match at South Africa’s premier cricket stadium and have a record of two wins and three draws since their first tour of South Africa in 1992/93.

Despite the Wanderers being renowned as a ground favouring fast bowlers — which should have put India at a disadvantage on some of their earlier tours, before the emergence of their potent current pace bowling attack — India have performed consistently well in Johannesburg.

The ground holds particularly happy memories for some of the Indian touring party.

New coach Rahul Dravid made his first Test century in a drawn match in 1996/97 and ten years later captained India to their first Test win in South Africa.

Kohli gave a batting masterclass when he made 119 and 96 in a high-scoring draw in 2013/14 to enable India to set the hosts a seemingly impossible target of 458 runs to win.

In that match, though, South Africa came close to beating India for the only time in Johannesburg, making 450 for eight in a dramatic draw.

Kohli then led India to victory on a sub-standard pitch four seasons ago, a win he has highlighted as a “milestone” which gave the side the belief to follow up with a series win in Australia last January.

They also lead England 2-1 with the final Test — called off last year due to covid in the Indian camp — to be played later in 2022.

Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane all made crucial runs on a pitch which was halted at one stage because conditions were regarded as dangerous, while Mohammed Shami, one of the heroes of the win in Centurion, took five for 28 in the second innings.

‘Several headaches’

A series win in South Africa remains a final frontier for India, who now have the opportunity to wrap up an historic triumph with a match to spare.

India were superior in all departments at Centurion, although South Africa’s fast bowlers came back strongly after a poor first day.

The home side’s batting was inadequate against a well-disciplined Indian bowling attack.

The middle order is vulnerable in the absence of the now-retired Quinton de Kock, while the opening batsmen, captain Dean Elgar and Aiden Markram, have failed to stay together beyond the second over of an innings in South Africa’s last three Tests.

The scale of the defeat in the first Test has presented the home camp with several headaches.

Elgar hinted at a change in the batting order and there are several permutations which are likely to be discussed.

Kyle Verreynne is expected to be De Kock’s successor as a wicketkeeper-batsman but South Africa will debate whether to add another specialist batsman in place of all-rounder Wiaan Mulder.

As is often the case at the Wanderers, South Africa could consider picking an all-pace attack, with left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj having only played in two of a possible six Tests at the ground, in one of which — against Sri Lanka last season — he was not called on to bowl.

India, meanwhile, have the luxury of considering whether to tamper with a winning team.

Likely teams:

South Africa (from): Dean Elgar (capt), Aiden Markram, Sarel Erwee, Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen, Temba Bavuma, Kyle Verreynne (wkt), Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Duanne Olivier, Lungi Ngidi, Glenton Stuurman.

India: Virat Kohli (capt), KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Risabh Pant (wkt), Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

Don’t let Akufo-Addo’s constitutional dictatorship, bare-faced thuggery despair us — NDC UK & Ireland Chapter’s on 40th Anniversary of 31st December Revolution

The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) chapter in the United Kingdom(UK) and the Republic of Ireland Alhaji Alhassan Mbalba has said the socio-economic and political situation in the country is worsened under the Akufo-Addo led administration coupled with unprecedented corruption, nepotism and tribalism.

He noted that the gains made in collective efforts to consolidate and deepen democracy have been derailed due to the constitutional dictatorship and acts of bare-faced thuggery by the NPP government.

Alhaji Alhassan Mbalba indicated the actions of Members of Parliament of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) during the election of Rt. Hon Alban Sumani Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic and the controversies surrounding the E-Levy bill are disgraceful and a blight on the democratic experiment as a country.

In a message to mark the 40th anniversary of the 31st December revolution, he urges party members to despair despite the disturbing events and intolerable and unbearable economic hardship in the country.

“It appears the gains we have made in our collective efforts to consolidate and deepen democracy in Ghana is under threat due to the constitutional dictatorship and acts of bare-faced thuggery being perpetrated by elements of President Akufo Addo- Bawumia led government.

“However, despite these disturbing events and intolerable and unbearable economic hardship, let us not be despaired. Insofar as the good people of Ghana do not want to experience or witness any unconstitutional change of government or coup in Ghana; or allow any political party to use unconstitutional or illegal means to gain or retain power, the NDC will continue to hold the NPP accountable and pursue all legal and democratic means of wrestling power from them in 2024,” he stated.

According to Alhaji Alhassan Mbalba, the 40th anniversary of the 31st December revolution will be celebrated without the leader of the revolution, the late Flt Lt John Jerry Rawlings of blessed memory.

“This is the second year that the 31st December revolution is being celebrated without the Leader of Revolution, the late Flt Lt John Jerry Rawlings of blessed memory”.

“The 31st December Revolution occasioned the formation of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), and subsequently National Democratic Congress (NDC) under the fourth Republican Constitution with the beliefs, values and guiding principles of Flt Lt J.J Rawlings as its main ethos,” he added.

Below is the full press statement

NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS- UK & IRELAND CHAPTER MESSAGE TO MARK 40th ANNIVERSARY OF 31ST DECEMBER REVOLUTION

This is the second year running that the 31st December Revolution is being commemorated without the Leader of the Revolution, late Flt Lt John Jerry Rawlings of blessed memory.

The 31st December Revolution occasioned the formation of the Provisional National Defense Council (PNDC), and subsequently National Democratic Congress(NDC) under the fourth Republican Constitution with the beliefs, values, and guiding principles of Flt J.J. Rawlings as its main ethos.

The significance of the PNDC government under the visionary leadership of late President Rawlings in the promulgation of the longest and enduring constitutional dispensation- Ghana’s 4th Republic – cannot be overemphasized. As Shakespeare opined “ when treason prospers, none dare call it treason”. There is no doubt that despite the sudden demise of Flt Lt Rawlings, the principles and values of the 31st December Revolution will continue to be relevant and important in sustaining and consolidating our longest attempt to institutionalize true democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism in Ghana.

The current socio-economic and political situation in the country is very concerning: Unprecedented corruption, nepotism and tribalism, including actions of Members of Parliament of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) during the election of Rt. Hon Alban Sumani Kingsford Bagbin as the Speaker 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic and the controversies surrounding the E-Levy bill are disgraceful and a blight on our democratic experiment as a country.

It appears the gains we have made in our collective efforts to consolidate and deepen democracy in Ghana is under threat due to the constitutional dictatorship and acts of bare-faced thuggery being perpetrated by elements of President Akufo Addo- Bawumia led government.

However, despite these disturbing events and intolerable and unbearable economic hardship, let us not be despaired. Insofar as the good people of Ghana do not want to experience or witness any unconstitutional change of government or coup in Ghana; or allow any political party to use unconstitutional or illegal means to gain or retain power, the NDC will continue to hold the NPP accountable and pursue all legal and democratic means of wrestling power from them in 2024.

Therefore, we must continue to cherish and propagate the ideals, values and principles underpinning the 31st December Revolution as we mark the 40th Anniversary of 31st December Revolution because as the saying goes life begins at 40.

May the Soul of President Rawlings and other fallen comrades rest in perfect peace.

Long Live Ghana! Long Live NDC! Long Live 31st December Revolution!

Thank you.

Accra,- The Reverend Emmanuel Osei Bediako Dinkunim, Head Pastor, International Central Gospel Church, Seekers Temple, Bohye-Mangolane, has encouraged Christians to depend on God and place their ways in His hands this year.

He said the Lord would do great things in the lives of Christians and that it behoved on them to come alive in their spirit, go to God and ask Him what he would want them to do for Him.

“The reason is that it will not be accomplished by you but it is by the power and might of the Lord,” he said.

Rev. Osei Bediako Dinkunim, who is also the Ashongman Area Supervising Minister of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) in a sermon titled: “God of Increase”, also noted that God was the source of increase for His children and that all they needed was to have faith in Him.

“Placing Something into God’s hands means letting God control something, asking for God’s blessings into something, preparedness to invite God into something or acknowledging God for being involved in something,” he said

Rev. Osei Bediako Dinkunim urged Christians to commit the little they had like marriage, business, vocation, education, sickness and problems into the hands of God knowing that Godly testimonies were their portion.
