Senegal on Tuesday defeated Ecuador 2-1 to progress to the Round 16 stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions kicked off their campaign in Group A with a defeat to the Netherlands.
Subsequently, the national team nicknamed the Teranga Lions bounced back with a win against the host nation Qatar in the second group game.
Today, Senegal had it all to play for when the Teranga Lions faced off with Ecuador in a winner takes all contest.
Following an impressive display in the early parts of the game, the African champions eventually scored through Ismaila Sarr who converted a spot kick in the 44th minute.
While Ecuador will restore parity in the 64th minute courtesy of a close-range effort from Moises Caicedo, Senegal would net a winning goal shortly after thanks to a powerful drive from captain Kalidou Koulibaly.
The win means Senegal finished Group A with 6 points and as a result sails through to the Round 16 stage.
The Netherlands bagged 7 points from the three games in Group A and also advances to the knockout stage as the group winners.
