Security task force arrests 24 miners, burns mining equipment at Adansi Akrofuom

Akrofuom (A/R),- A Joint Security Taskforce headed by the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Adansi Akrofuom, Mr Maurice Jonas Woode, has arrested 24 illegal miners operating in the Sukuma Forest reserve at Pewodie near Grumesa in the Adansi Akrofuom District.

The Miners aged between 14 to 45 were said to have been operating in the middle of the forest for some time now despite the ban on illegal mining and mining in forest areas.

The task force also destroyed 16 Chanfan machines, over 200 tents and also seized 104 pumping machines and 11 Gold detector machines from the miners.

It was the second time in two weeks that the Akrofuom DCE had led a raid on illegal miners in the area after a similar exercise at Betenase.

The DCE told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that “we had a tip-off that there has been fracas among illegal miners operating at Pawodie and Betenase. This prompted the District Security Council to map out strategies to arrest them and halt their operations”.

He announced his resolve to go after illegal miners destroying water bodies and forest areas in the District.

“We are leaving no stone unturned in clamping down on the activities of these illegal miners. We want these arrests and subsequent burning of mining equipment to serve as a deterrent to others,” the visibly furious DCE stated.

Chief Superintendent Joseph Nyaaba, Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, said the Security Taskforce was committed to nipping the activities of illegal miners in the bud.

He promised that such operations will not be a flash in the pan, disclosing that,” 83 Security personnel were involved in this operation. This is an indication of our preparedness to stop the activities of illegal miners “.

He cautioned illegal miners who had defied the Presidential orders of banning all illegal mining activities, to halt their operations since the Police would not relent in their efforts to go after them.

AMA engages stakeholders to find solution to climate change impact

Accra,- The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has launched its local C40’s Global Green New Deal (GGND)/Inclusive Climate Action (ICA) Pilot Initiative at a day’s consultation workshop for stakeholders in Accra.

The workshop was also to introduce to the city’s stakeholders the Inclusive Climate Action Programme and to engage them on inclusion and equity for climate action with the focus on the informal sector to promote inclusivity of process, policy and impact within the sector.

The GGND pilot initiative was aimed at strengthening the informal sector collaboration with the city administration in ways to promote local ownership of climate action and enhance the sector’s access to wider benefits of climate action.

Mr Mohammed Adjei Sowah, the Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive opening the workshop said without the active inclusion and direction of the informal sector, a livable and resilient city could not be built hence the workshop for their contribution.

“We are fully aware that the informal sector contribute over 80 per cent of our workforce and 90 per cent of all new jobs created comes from the sector. So if this is the demography of our city then it is important that a special attention is given to the sector to help uplifts the city’ standard of living,” he said.

Mr Sowah, who is also the C40 Vice-Chair for Africa said over the years aggressive development attempts had been made which favoured the rich while little attention was paid to the huge population of the poor, the vulnerable and the weak, whose contributions were most needed for the progress of the city.

“It is about time we tap into the energies, the skills, and the interest of the informal sector to help find solution to the challenges of climate change,” he stated.

He mentioned smoke from refuse burning and emissions of vehicles and negative environmental human activities as some of the factors that had contributed to climate change, which had affected rainfall pattern, resulted in strong sunshine and heat, flooding during the raining season and strong tidal waves that affected fishing.

“Today the cost of climate change to the economy of the city of Accra is so huge that if we pay less attention to the negative things we do to the environment there would be a time that we will not be able to manage our city,” he said.

Mr Sowah said in the pursuit of driving climate change mitigation agenda the Accra Metropolitan Assembly has developed a Climate Action Plan, which has five key priority areas; namely waste, transportation, energy in buildings, land use, and the mainstreaming of climate issues in all activities.

“It is based on these activities that we then continue to engage all stakeholders in the city to pay particular attention to climate issues as we mainstream climate issues in every facet of our lives.

He said the AMA has put in place a policy to give discount to developers in the processing of their building permits for having climate friendly in their building design, adding: “This is to encourage the developers to mainstream climate change in their plans.”

“We are quite excited that with this policy in place I have seen a lot of buildings coming up in Accra that are green friendly.”

Mr Sowah said Ghana has made strong commitment to the Paris Agreement and that the workshop was to ensure that all hands were on deck without leaving anybody behind to tackle issues of climate change and greenhouse emission in the city.

“By 2050, 70 per cent of the world population would be living in cities hence the need to structure our city’s development to accommodate the influx of people coming while making it livable and at the same time resilient to all forms of stresses and shocks that may happen.”

No need to call for Mariano Barreto’s sack – Kotoko Board Member Kwadwo Boateng Genfi

Board Member of Asante Kotoko, Mr. Kwadwo Boateng Genfi, has jumped to the defense of head coach Mariano Barreto following their defeat to Hearts of Oak.

The Porcupine Warriors title chances suffered a massive blow after their 1-0 defeat in the matchday 31 fixture against Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Danie Afriyie’s 64th-minute strike was enough to hand the Phobains all three points.

The Portuguese manager after the defeat has come under intense pressure with some section of the fans calling for his sacking.

However, Mr, Genfi says it would be highly unfair to fire the former Black Stars gaffer.

“When you want to use one match to assess a team or the technical aspect of a team, I think it not too far, the reason been that Kotoko, as we speak, is at the second position with 56 points, others (hearts of oak) has done well that is why they’re on top,” he told Kumasi FM.

“This doesn’t mean your team or technical handlers is poor, no.

“Then, those that he won over them, what would they say about their coaches, there are 18 clubs battling for the league title, and we are at the 2nd position, so we have done well, we would have been happy if we are at the top spot.

“We will help and do anything possible to win our remaining matches same as our other opponents, so one cannot say the technical team is poor and must be sack based on the assessment of one match, we have to be fair to them as well,” he concluded.

Asante Kotoko sit 2nd on the league log with 56 points while Hearts of Oak occupy the top spot with 59 points.
