Togbe Afede XIV Courts support for African Traditional Leadership Union

Accra, June. 15, GNA – Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomofia of the Asogli State has received the blessings of Togbi Kpodegbe Toyi Djigla, the King of the Allada Kingdom and the President of the Council of Chiefs of Benin on the idea to form “African Traditional Leadership Union”.

Togbe Afede as part of his visit to the West African Power Pool Secretariat in Cotonou, Benin, paid a courtesy call on Togbi Kpodegbe Toyi Djigla of the Allada Kingdom.

Issues discussed among the two Chiefs was the need to leverage chieftaincy as a tool of development.

The two traditional rulers stressed the need to make traditional leadership felt in the life of people in West Africa and the rest of Africa through the formation of a continent-wide union of African Traditional Rulers.

Togbe Afede emphasized that the realization of this laudable idea would only be made possible when all the Chiefs and Kings of Africa come together to form what he named African Traditional Leadership Union akin to the Africa Union which is dominated by political leadership.

Togbi Kpodegbe who was overwhelmed by the proposal felt elated and jumped at the agenda by declaring his unflinching support for it.

He explained that the idea was timely, indicating that Africa would have seen better development if this dream were successful in the days of the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah and Colonel Muammar Qaddafi of Ghana and Libya respectively who were astute and unrepentant Pan-Africanists.

The King of the Allada Kingdom pledged to rally the support of the Benin Council of Chiefs towards the realization of this dream.

He expressed his readiness to attend any forum for the formation of the “African Traditional Leadership Union.”

Togbe Afede later presented some Ghanaian regalia to King Kpodegbe Toyi who in turn honored Togbe Afede with a Golden scepter and some priceless traditional regalia of the Allada Kingdom.

NCA and NMC sign Memorandum of Cooperation to regulate broadcast content

Accra,- The National Communications Authority (NCA) and the National Media Commission (NMC), Tuesday, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) to collaborate to regulate contents of broadcast media organisations to sanitise the broadcast landscape in the country.

The memorandum is a mechanism by which the two State agencies will work together to address the challenges of unwholesome broadcast contents on radio and television in the country to improve the broadcast space.

Mr Joe Anokye, Director General of NCA, signed on behalf of the Authority, while Mr George Sarpong, Executive Secretary of NMC, signed on the Commission’s behalf, in the presence of Mr Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, Minister of Information and Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, Chairman of the NMC.

Other signatories were; Mr Ronald Affail Monney, President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Mrs Gloria Hiadzi, Executive Secretary, Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Colonel Aggrey-Quarshie, Director, Public Relations, Ghana Armed Forces and Mr Sulemana Braimah, Executive Director, Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA).

Speaking at the event, Mr Anokye, said as an Agency charged with the responsibility of regulating and monitoring licensed and authorization holders, it had no power to regulate contents of media organisations, a situation he said had limited the Authority from undertaking stringent measures including; revoking licenses of broadcasters who churned out unwholesome contents.

He said the MoC would, therefore, enable the Authority to legally apply sanctions when necessary through recommendations from the Media Commission.

“The NCA has punitive powers under the law, but does not have the mandate to regulate content. Per Section 13 of Act 775, the NCA can suspend or revoke the frequency authorization, where it is in the public interest or because of the National Security.

“So upon recommendation of the NMC, the NCA is able to legally apply sanctions. The key here is that if we work collaboratively together then the NMC knowing that the media content is not what it is supposed to be can work with the NCA based on the law that empowers the NCA to be able to apply the necessary sanctions,” Mr Anokye said.

Section 3 (d) of the National Communications Act, 2008, Act 769 requires the NCA to regulate and monitor licensed and authorization holders to ensure that such licenses were used for the purposes which they were issued and acquired.

Mr Anokye said the establishment of the Broadcast Monitoring System, gave the Authority the ability in real time to understand the KPRIs for the licenses that it had, as well as authorizations that had been given out, both for TV and radio and cautioned the public against operating any broadcast oragnisation without authorization from the NCA.

Mr Ayeboafoh, said more often than not, the Commission had been vilified for being inactive even though it had no power to enforce anything beyond asking offenders to render apology or retract stories that were deemed inappropriate.

“But it was found out that for instance, within the Electronic Communications Act, there are provisions there that if properly applied can be useful for all of us and therefore, there was the need to work together, even as we work towards legislation that will eventually transfer power to the NMC,” he said.

He urged journalists to ensure that the average Ghanaian was protected from misinformation, to build public confidence and trust in the media.

Mr Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, urged the NCA and the NMC to implement agreements of the cooperation to address infractions and sanitise the broadcast airspace.

He advised the NCA to make public its decisions on the revocation of licences of any broadcast media organisation through publications for the avoidance of misconception and mistrust.

Mr Sulemana Braimah of MFWA said the cooperation would also strengthen stakeholders’ efforts towards enhancing press freedom in the country.

Traditional leaders are crucial in governance and development – Dr Letsa

Kpando (V/R), – Dr Archibald Yao Letsa, Volta Regional Minister, has said the role of traditional leaders in governance and development remain crucial at all times.

He said Chiefs were no longer interested in conquering territories as it was in the past, but now concerned about promoting the welfare and development of the people through traditional festivals which discussed development projects.

Dr Letsa said this in a speech read on his behalf by Mr Ernest Quist, Kpando Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) during non-denominational thanksgiving service to commemorate the first anniversary of peace and reunion of the Akpini Traditional Area held in Kpando.

He said the age old Akpini Chieftaincy dispute had deprived the good people of Kpando lots of economic and social developments, which was as a result of inability of the Paramountcy to install a substantive chief.

Dr Letsa said “where there is unity, there is strength; and where there is strength, there is development because it is only with a united front that Kpando would get back to her glorious days.”

The Regional Minister noted that chiefs and elders also served as symbol of unity when people get divided along political lines adding that “the 1992 Constitution of Ghana prohibits Chiefs from actively engaging in partisan politics in order to unite the people for a common goal after political season.”

He also touched on the dispute settlement roles of Chiefs among their subjects to ensure that there was peace and harmony in the community.

Dr Ernest Aculey Ansah, Founder of Akpini Elite Group told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on the side-lines of the event, that the process involved in uniting the various chiefs in the traditional area was a difficult one.

He said the Group aimed at working closely with Chiefs to help them patch up any differences they had between themselves to progress to do much more for the Akpini Traditional Area.

The Founder said the Group would educate and empower the youth of the area especially the young ladies in order to get them some jobs.

Mrs Della Sowah, Member of Parliament (MP) of Kpando Constituency commended the Akpini Elite Group for their efforts in uniting the area adding that “we are looking forward to a better unity after today.”

She said she would use her percentage of the resources available to the Assembly for the needed developmental projects.

Ghanaians must cultivate continuous tree planting interest – MCE

©Ashaiman,- Mr Albert Boakye Okyere, Ashaiman Municipal Chief Executive has noted that the current Green Ghana Initiative should not be a nine-day wonder; “the commencement of tree planting should serve as igniting point for continuous national culture of tree planting.

“Ghanaians must now develop new culture for the protection of the environment through consistent tree planting,” the official launch of Green Ghana Initiative, a government project spearheaded by Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to ensure the planting of five million trees nationwide must serve as a reference point.

Mr Okyere mentioned that the exercise was initiated to tackle emerging climate change issues, which have affected the rain pattern. “We must work together to promote sustainable environment through the tree planting initiative”.

He said there was a symbiotic relationship between plants and human as such it was essential to plant more trees; “We all know the significance of trees in our live, we take oxygen from them and they take carbon dioxide from us.

“So there is the need to aggressively address the climate shift, we are in June and we know how it rains heavily but few rains have been recorded this year.”

Mr Okyere cautioned the community members to welcome the initiative and understand that the climate was changing and there was the need to approach the changes to save the environment.

While planting some trees in some communities in the Municipality, he indicated that it was important to continuously care for trees when planted by watering, fencing and pruning to give them the needed environment to grow well.

Ghana, Andre Dede Ayew has called for calm despite the Black Stars inability to score a single goal against Morocco and Ivory Coast.

In two international friendlies played, the Black Stars failed to score losing to Morocco in Rabat before drawing 0-0 with Ivory Coast at the Cape Coast Stadium.

“We know what’s ahead of us, some of us have played a lot of qualification games and we know what’s ahead and we will be ready, we are not worried.

“We would have wanted to win the two games but we are not worried,” he added.

Ghana have World Cup qualifying assignment in September. The Stars opened their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Ethiopia at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
