Senegal – the new African Champions

Cameroon, Feb. 6, GNA – The Teranga Lions of Senegal defeated the Pharoahs of Egypt to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the Olembe Stadium in Yaonde, Cameroon on Sunday evening.

It was the Teranga Lions that roared the loudest to secure their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title, after defeating the Pharaohs 4-2 on penalties.

The entire 120 minutes ended barren.

Mane converted the decisive post-match penalty after a goalless extra-time to erase demons of his fourth minute miss from the spot, in the process stealing the thunder from his Liverpool team mate Mohamed Salah for Egypt.

This was after 120 minutes of thrilling and end-to-end action, which saw the West Africans dominating the game right from the blast of the whistle to the very last minute.

Having been in the finals twice, 2002 and 2019, Senegal was determined to make amends this time and went straight into action with an early fourth minute penalty, but was wasted by Sadio Mane.

They did not give up and mounted intense pressure on the Egyptians created many scoring chances, but Egyptian goalie Mohamed “Gabaski” Aboubagabat stood between them and victory as he made several goal-bound saves to keep the scores intact.

Senegalese goalie, Eduado Mendy on the other hand, also saved his side from defeat within the 120 minutes, with two clear cut chances that fell on the path of the Egyptians.

Mendy again proved to be the hero of the day when he saved Mohanad Lasheen’s kick to dash the hopes of the Pharaohs, and granted Mane the opportunity to deliver the final kick that handed Senegal their first ever AFCON trophy.
