Nkwanta South Municipal Fire Commander cautions public on use of electrical gadgets

Nkwanta (O/R),- The Nkwanta South Municipal Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Mr Francis Agbavitor, has asked the public to be more careful about the use of electrical gadgets in their various homes to avoid fire outbreaks.

The caution was issued following recent fire outbreaks in the area, which are believed to be caused by electrical faults.

Mr Agbavitor, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, observed that the occurrence of these fires stemmed mostly from people leaving their homes without turning off their gadgets.

He said engaging quacks or unqualified electricians for wiring homes and the use of aged wires were mostly the cause of these domestic fires, leading to loss of lives and property.

He, however, urged landlords to use qualified electricians, to buy approved wires and avoid plugging in many gadgets on one extension cord.

He urged the public to avoid keeping highly inflammable substances such as petrol in their homes and constantly check their gas cylinders for leakages as they usually trigger fire outbreaks.

Mr Agbavitor urged farmers to create fire belts around their farms to avoid setting fire to adjoining farms and bushes.

“The law is clear on setting bushfires for meat,” he added.

He urged estate developers to respect space outlays in-between building plots to open access to emergencies and fire-fighting equipment.

“My officers are alert to curb fire situations in Nkwanta South Municipality,” he added.
