Mariano Barreto dismisses Asante Kotoko exit reports

Asante Kotoko coach Mariano Barreto has refuted reports that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

The Portuguese gaffer has been under pressure following the club’s defeat to Hearts of Oak in the matchday 31 games at the Accra Sports Stadium.

With a game to end the 2020/21 season, it has been reported that the management of the club will part ways with the former Black Stars coach.

But speaking to Nhyira FM, the 64-year-old said he has neither made such a claim nor have his employers told him anything of that sort.

“I as a coach haven’t said I’m leaving,” he said.

“The board and management have not said anything so I don’t want to respond to speculations that I am leaving at the end of the season,” he added

Barreto was named as the head coach for the Porcupine Warriors prior to the start of the second half of the season, replacing Johnson Smith and Gazale who were named as interim coach following the departure of Maxwell Konadu in December.

Kotoko are still in contention for the MTN FA Cup, facing Bechem Chelsea at the quarterfinal stage.

The Porcupine Warriors meanwhile, will play their final game of the season against Elmina Sharks at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium on Sunday.
