Akim Oda (E/R) Jan 26, GNA – In a joint effort to fight the pandemic fear of climate change, Ghanaians have been advised to comply with the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) premised on climate change mitigation pillars.
The NDC is a non-binding national plan highlighting climate-related targets for emission reductions, policies and measures government aims to implement in response to climate change.
The climate change mitigation measures include; afforestation, forest management and changes in the industrial system.
Mr Ernest Adofo, Akim Oda District Manager of Forestry Service Division of the Forestry Commission, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, advised chainsaw operators and individuals to use the right procedures in cutting down trees from the forest.
He said the importance of forests could not be underestimated because they provided habitats for animals and livelihood for humans, prevented soil erosion and mitigated climate change.
He said there were proper ways of securing trees from the forest that included buying legal lumber from authorised timber firms and requiring a permit for tree felling.
He said due to high monitoring activities in the Akim Oda forest zone by the Forest Guards and the Military, illegal chainsaw operators activities were minimised.
“Also the arrest and prosecution of illegal chainsaw operators have served as deterrent to individuals,” he said.
