Akonnor elated with Daniel Amartey’s return to Black Stars set up

Ghana head coach, Charles Akonnor has described defender, Daniel Amartey’s return to the Black Stars set up as a “positive add-on” to his squad.

The Leicester City defender was in action for the first time in four years in a friendly against Morocco on Tuesday.

Amartey partnered Amien anchorman, Nicholas Opoku in Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Morocco in an international friendly in Rabat on Tuesday.

Akonnor talked about Amartey’s addition to his squad.

“Daniel Amartey is a disciplined boy. I have known for a while, even before I became the coach of the Black Stars,” Akonnor the FA website after the game.

“When I went to Europe, he was injured so I visited him and spoke to him and waited for the moment.

“He is a very positive addition to the team, he has been away for a long but there was no sign of rustiness from him even though he has been away for a long time and so you look at the players we have and those who were not here i.e. Partey, Wakaso and others, should we get a full house and abide by the same rules of the game and how we want to play, I think we will do well,” he added.

Amartey made 12 appearances for Leicester City, scoring just a goal as the Foxes finished 5th last season.

He is expected to play another role when Ghana face Ivory Coast in the next international friendly at the Cape Coast Stadium on Saturday, June 12.

The former FC Copenhagen defender has played for Ghana at the 2015 and the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations and is expected to be key in the 2021 AFCON to be hosted in Cameroon next year.
