2022 WCQ: Milovan Rajevac explains the reason behind Philemon Baffuor’s call-up for Ethiopia, South Africa games

Ghana coach, Milovan Rajevac has explained the decision behind the inclusion of Philemon Baffuor in his latest call up.

Baffour was named in Ghana’s squad for the final round of the game of the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers.

The Dreams FC right-back has been earned a constant call up to the Black Stars since featuring in the Afcon U-20 winning side of Abdul Karim Zito.

But the defender has not played in any competitive game so far for the team, despite injuries to regular right-back Andy Yiadom.

In Yiadom’s absence, Hearts of Oak captain Fatawu Mohammed featured in the 1-0 defeat against South Africa and Daniel Amartey played the double-header against Zimbabwe.

Coincidentally, Baffour’s club is linked to Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku and that has raised doubts on whether his call-up is based on merit.

“I like to give chances to young players and Baffour is no exception. He played in the Africa U-20 tournament and he has quality.

“Against Zimbabwe, we went in for Amartey because I know him better and we couldn’t afford to make any mistakes.

“With time, he will get his chance and I’m hoping he will deliver and grow as a top player,” Rajevac said at the press conference to name his squad for the two games.

The Black Stars will play Ethiopia in Johannesburg on Nvember 11 before welcoming South Africa in their last group game in Ghana on November 14.
