Ho, Feb. 28, GNA- The 1998-Year Group of Mawuli Senior High School has donated two standard table tennis boards to their Alma mater.
The donation was made possible through the collaboration of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) and is expected to further the development of the sports in the school, and Ho Municipality as a whole.
Mr Eric Senyo Arku, President of the Year Group, said holistic education informed the need to support sports development in the school, and that the group had considered the expanding prospects of sports, and committed to supporting the school in helping students nurture their talents.
“Sport is an area that we have not really looked into as a nation. So, for our year group, it is a piece of welcome news that we are trying to draw attention to that aspect so that some more critical concern can be taken towards that regard, and then if we have our people who do not end up theoretically with their books, they can still end up even in the sports field and make it,” the President said.
Mr Mawuko Afadzinu, President of the GTTA, said the vision was to develop a centre in the region and create talents and was the reason for the partnership.
He said the national team was made up of some regional champions of the sport, and that the development of a centre would bring them together to help advance the Region.
“Sports development is key, and table tennis is always defined as the lesser-known sports, and it is very important that we develop all these in the Region,” Mr Afadzinu stated.
Mr Emmanuel Annan, a table tennis champion from the Region, and the founder of the Ho Tennis Club, who had been advocating for the development of a centre, lamented how the unavailability of a training facility affected exuberant children.
“Our major challenge so far has been our inability to get a suitable place- a standard place to train even the children in this town. So, we do everything outside- under trees, open places and with bad wooden boards,” he lamented.
Mr Annan commended the commitment of Mr Afadzinu, President of the National Table Tennis Association, who shared the vision.
“We don’t have the facilities, so by giving the boards to Mawuli School, we would use the opportunity to train the students in the school and possibly even extend it to others in the region.”
He told GNA of plans to host table tennis workshops at the school and to cultivate it as a centre for training school children in the sport.
The Ho Tennis Club formed less than a year ago, had recorded significant success both in and out of the Region, and attracted a respectable number of enthusiasts.
The project was coordinated by Justice Norvor, Afizie Ackumey,
Godwin Kumeko, Awunyo Akaba Worlasi and Worlanyo Afadzinu – all members of Aggrey House.
