Ghanaian sports journalists, Gary Al-Smith has taken a swipe at CK Akonnor for naming 19-year-old English-born player, Kwame Afriyie Opoku plying his trade in the fourth tier of English football for Colchester United in his squad for the final round of Afcon qualifiers.
Akonnor on Thursday evening named his final squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations [Afcon] against South Africa and Sao Tome on March 25 and 28 respectively.
According to Al-Smith, it is disrespectful to the stature of the Black Stars team to call any player from the fourth tier of any league in the world to come and play for the team.
The Joy Sports editor stressed that the national team belongs to every Ghanaian but the standard should be maintained; to him, handing a player from the fourth tier of any league unless the player is that extraordinary player-checks on the said player proves he isn’t that extraordinary player-is a dent on the stature of the Black Stars.
Gary wrote on Facebook:
The Black Stars belong to every Ghanaian.
But Ghanaian players in the English fourth tier SHOULD NOT be getting Black Stars callups.
Unless the person is Dong Bortey, Yusif Chibsah, Valentine Atem and Sammy Barthez combined.
Is Mr Colchester that good? YouTube suggests he is normal.
It is so disrespectful to the stature of the team to call a player from the fourth tier in ANY country.
Patiently waiting for CK Akonnor to explain his callups so we hear why Opoku was called.
