Accra: President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday announced the nomination of Mr. Yussif Issaka Jajah as the deputy minister-designate for the Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Ministry. He is set to replace Mr. Mark Okraku Mantey, who served under the Akuffo Addo-led government for four years. This nomination is one of 12 deputy ministerial appointments recently unveiled.

According to Ghana News Agency, the nomination has sparked varied reactions among industry players about the necessity of a deputy minister for the sector and Mr. Jajah’s suitability given his educational and professional background. Dr. Kwesi Eyison, CEO of Pacific Tours, expressed strong support for the position, highlighting that the industry’s diverse sectors require integrated operations and the presence of political heads at events to promote activities.

Dr. Eyison emphasized the importance of regular stakeholder engagements, necessitating a deputy minister to aid in these efforts. He underscored the industry’s reliance on public-private partnerships locally and internationally, stating that a deputy minister would provide essential support in these collaborations. Furthermore, he noted the gender balance achieved with Mr. Jajah’s nomination, complementing the female minister.

Conversely, Mr. Emmanuel Frimpong, a tourism consultant and analyst, questioned the need for a deputy minister, especially given the President’s intention to maintain a lean government. He argued that previous deputy tourism ministers had little impact and suggested that appointing someone from within the industry might have been more beneficial. Frimpong stressed the importance of passion and understanding in navigating the complex tourism sector.

Mr. Jajah, a three-time Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North Constituency, holds several academic qualifications, including an MBA in International Oil and Gas Management from the University of Dundee, a BSc in Accounting from UPSA, and further credentials in Development Finance and Energy Economics from GIMPA. Before entering politics, he worked as a research fellow and consultant in the oil and gas sector, building a diverse professional background that he now brings to his new role.
