Wonkayaw community on sanitation “time bomb”

Dambai (O/R)- Wonkayaw, a farming community in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region is facing a serious sanitation problem as the community’s refuse dump was stretching to homes.

Some residents feared the stench from the refuse dump and open defecation by some people could cause a sanitation disaster.

Residents say the community was engulfed in filth and all attempts to get the authorities to relocate the dumping site had proved futile.

Mr. Israel Tosu, a shop owner, said the current state of the dumping site was causing public nuisance as some homes and footpath to villages like Ankra Ankura and Monkratey had been covered with refuse.

He said the insanitary situation posed a health risk to the people.

Mr. Patrick Jilima, thev Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Krachi East Municipal, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the Assembly was collaborating with Zoomlion and the Environmental Health Department to relocate the dumping site to a place “beyond human habitation”.

He said efforts were being made to create daily dumping site or platform for the people while the Assembly strategised for the evacuation of the refuse.

Mr. Jilima assured residents of the Assemblies commitment to make the community one of the cleanest in the Oti Region in line with the President’s campaign on sanitation.

Banka, another farming community is also suffering from a similar situation.
