Tarkwa: Professor Grace Ofori-Sarpong Akuffo, the Founder of the Ladies in Mining and Allied Professions in Ghana (LiMAP-Gh), has called on women to empower young girls in their communities to help them unlock their full potential. She made this appeal in Tarkwa while addressing members of the association, female students from Basic and Senior High Schools, the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, representatives from security agencies, beauticians, dressmakers, and NGOs during the 2025 International Women’s Day (IWD) celebration.
According to Ghana News Agency, the IWD celebration, observed annually on March 8, was organized by LiMAP-Gh in collaboration with the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation (GFGF) and UMaT, Tarkwa. The theme for this year is ‘Accelerating Action: Personal and Collective Responsibility.’ Prof. Akuffo highlighted that LiMAP-Gh was established nine years ago to support and empower women in the industry, with the slogan ‘Shining ahead and transforming our generations.’ She emphasized the importance of reaching young girls in basic schools to inspire them about a brighter future.
Dr. Catherine Kuutor Kuupol, President of LiMAP-Gh, noted that this year’s celebration underscores the importance of every individual and collective effort towards gender equality, rights, and empowerment. She stated that their journey has involved personal growth and collective progress, as they challenge stereotypes and break barriers. Dr. Kuupol thanked their partners, GFGF, UMaT, Tarkwa, and the dedicated LiMAP-Gh team for their support in making the event successful.
Prof. Michael Affam, Dean of the Office of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (ORIC) at UMaT, Tarkwa, remarked that the IWD 2025 slogan ‘Accelerate Action’ encourages taking concrete steps towards gender equality. He pointed out the need to honor the achievements of women globally and locally while advocating for personal equality within communities.
Nana Abena Kunadjoa II, queen mother of Wassa Fiase Traditional Area, shared her initiative to prevent teenage pregnancies in her community. She urged women to undertake similar initiatives to support and empower young girls. A panel discussion highlighted the importance of personal and collective responsibility in advancing gender equality and empowering women.
