Ajumako (C/R), Jan. 09, GNA – Chief Superintendent Stephen Anane Boye Tetteh, the District Police Commander for Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam, has bemoaned the sorry state of police stations and barracks in the district.

According to him, all five police stations located in Ajumako, Bisease, Abaasa, Nkwantanum, and Ochiso as well as homes for the 33 police officers in the district had weak buildings and leaking ceilings which made them unfit for habitation.

“Our accommodation is not the best. When you go to Nkwantanum, all the homes are rented facilities and landlords have failed to work on their structures, and the police station is in a bad shape.

“The situation is the same everywhere. The whole place is leaking with documents and other items being destroyed. These are welfare issues and that is paramount to the individual,” he lamented in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Ajumako.

Chief Superintendent Tetteh, therefore, called for a facelift of the various facilities to meet accepted standards and create a conducive working environment for the personnel.

The district commander said the cost of rent was high due to competition with the students of the Ajumako campus of the University of Education, Winneba.

He indicated that the transfer of officers to the district had become challenging owing to the lack of accommodation in the area, adding that most officers did not have their families with them.

Chief Supt Tetteh said his office had made several appeals to the District Assembly and Chiefs of the area and they have given assurances that a new police station would be built for the command.

“A new police station at Nkwantanum too will help elevate it to a district status so that Nkwantanum oversees Enyan Abaasa, Enyan Essiam, and Enyanmaim,” he added.
