“We are living in hardship” – bereaved widow cries for help

Accra Miss Vida Eyisi, 53 year old unemployed, who lost her husband through the May 9 stadium disaster in 2001 at the Accra Sports Stadium, has said she has been living in hardship for the past 17 years, following the demised of her husband.

Miss. Eyisi recounted how sad it was for her, when she heard that her husband was one of the lost souls on the night, saying it was a regrettable day in her life.

She wailed uncontrollably when she remembered how her husband had only told them he was going to watch football but never returned home.

According to the 53 year old unemployed mother of three, her deceased husband, Stephen Darko Tawiah (who was into printing press business) was the breadwinner of the family and since his demise, they have been living in very tough conditions.

Narrating her ordeal to the GNA Sports amidst intermittent tears, with sorrow filled in her voice, Miss Eyisi said that, their situation had become so critical to the point that their landlord has given them notice to vacate from their current place of stay.

She said all attempts to get the needed support to be able to relocate had proved futile. She was however grateful that the May 9 fund was taking care of the children at school.

They give us school fees and pay for other necessities to help in the children’s education. But we are being ejected from our room and we don’t have any money to rent. That was what I told them but they didn’t say anything, she revealed.

I told them (authorities) that, the children I and would not have anywhere to go if the Landlord finally ejects us, but no one is willing to help us, she said.

She added that they were living from hand to mouth because the only money the whole family survived on was the education fund that came for the children since she was unemployed.

The children are now 17, 19 and 22 years and I am the one to take care of them but I am not working.

We need help! I am pleading with Ghanaians to help us get a place of shelter, she added.
