UPSA organises orientation programme for first cohort of GAF personnel

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) has organised an orientation programme for the first batch of students from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) as part of academic requirements for newly admitted students of the University.

The fresh students, mainly staff of the Forces Pay Regiment, were enrolled into various diploma and degree programmes for the 2021/2022 academic year.

A total of 35 students registered for the semester and are due to undergo the rites of matriculation in April.

This follows a partnership agreement between the GAF and UPSA which aims at building the capacities of GAF staff through the provision and delivery of academic and professional programmes as well as short/certificate courses.

Under the MOU, tuition will take place at the GAF’s Haizel School of Finance, Burma Camp in Accra, leading to the award of Diploma in Accounting, Bachelor of Science (BSc) Accounting and Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Accounting and Finance.

Welcoming the fresh students, Dean of the faculty of Accounting and Finance, Professor Raymond Dziwornu, who delivered a speech on behalf of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, congratulated the freshers on their successful admission into the University assuring them of UPSA’s commitment to making their experience at the institution exciting, memorable and worthwhile.

He acknowledged that combining academic work and professional duties as soldiers would be demanding but urged the students to press on.

He further encouraged the students to add value to themselves by taking advantage of UPSA’s tuition-free professional programmes (i.e ACCA, ICA, ICAG etc).

He stressed that the combination of an academic degree and a professional certificate will give graduates an advantage on the job market and position them for better job offers.

Prof Dziwornu said the Management of the University was elated to have partnered the GAF, emphasising the conduct of professionalism on both institutions.

“We are also delighted to be associated with the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly because of the high professional standards that you demonstrate in your work,” he said.

“And for us at UPSA, we know that this is very consistent with the high quality of the brand we have [built over the years].”

In his welcome address, the Commanding Officer of the Forces Pay Regiment, Colonel Timothy Oxford Afotey Laryea, reiterated the GAF’s resolve to add value to personnel through regular capacity building and training programmes.

He commended the Management of UPSA for the partnership with GAF which will enable army personnel to acquire various degrees while serving in the Force and discharging their duties unabated.

Colonel Laryea said: “The GAF attaches lots of importance to this partnership with UPSA and the admission of the first cohort of students demonstrates the GAF’s desire to upgrade the capacity of her staff.”

Key speakers at the orientation included Dr Albert Martins, Director of Business Development Centre; Mrs Vera Akumiah, Deputy Director of Administration; Mr Bismark Quarshie, a deputy Director of ISTD; Mr Denis Attuquayefio, Senior Assistant Registrar in charge of Admissions and Graduation; and Mr Steve Tagoe, assistant Registrar at the Library.

They took the students through the rules, regulations and values of the University, general academic issues, rules of examination and grading system, channels of communication as well as  facilities at their disposal.
