Winneba (C/R), July 21, GNA-The Department of Basic Education of the University of Education Winneba (UEW), has been tasked to continue to use its rich professional capabilities to produce teachers who will positively influence basic education delivery in the Country.

Mrs Patty Assan, Director of School, and Instruction of the Ghana Education Service (GES) made the call at the launch of the 20th Anniversary of the Department of Basic Education at Winneba.

It is being held under the theme: “Rediscovering the Quintessence of Education: The Role of Basic Education Delivery in Ghana.”

As part of the celebration, several programmes including, public lectures and joint international conferences will be held in connection with the theme.

Mrs Assan, who was the special guest at the launching stated, that 20 years of quality delivery of basic education was not a mean achievement, however, GES and the Government expected that teachers in the Department and Management of the University will go the extra mile to improve on the gains made.

She challenged the Department to train teachers who will be practical and oriented to produce solutions to the numerous cha challenges confronting Basic Education in the country, saying as time stakeholders in education focused on the current trends and demands to build schools.

‘UEW needs to be commended for the success they have achieved in the two decades, training quality teachers”, she added.

Professor Samuel Asiedu-Addo, Dean of Graduate Studies of UEW, who launched the anniversary on behalf of Professor Mawutor Avoke, Vice-Chancellor of the University, recounting the genesis and success story of the department, stated that the Department was established during the 2000/2001 academic year with 400 students.

He said it started a two-in-one programme (Primary and junior Secondary options) and later merged to offer a Basic Education programme.

According to him, the Department was currently running three programmes (Bachelor of Education, Degree in Basic Education and Diploma in Education, with a student population of more than 2,000 and have since trained thousands of students.

Enumerating its achievements, Dr Asiedu-Addo, said its products were excelling in schools and other educational institutions across the country.

He attributed the successes chalked by the Department within the period to the dedication and hard work of the Management, staff and pioneer faculty and assured that Management of UEW will continue to support the growth trajectory of the Department.

Earlier in a welcoming, Mr Nixom Saba Adzifome, Head of the Department, applauded the excellent role the Department had played in training and nurturing competent teachers for basic schools.

“We have withstood the stress and strain of our mission as a department, chalking successes in the midst of challenges,” he stated.

He stressed the need for them to celebrate its 20 years of existence to reflect on what they have done to serve as a guide to do more, now and in the future.

Neenyi Ghartey VII Effutu Omanhene, Dr Yayra Dzakadzie, Vice-Dean Faculty of Education Studies of the University, Mrs Anita Amissah, Awutu Senya East Municipal Chief Executive who is an alumnus and Mrs Mabel Judith Micah, Effutu Municipal Director of Education, addressed the gathering in turns.

Later, the dignitaries and some invited guests jointly cut the anniversary Cake to commence the celebration.
