Tourism Minister calls on Axim chiefs

Accra� Mrs Catherine Abelema Afeku, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, has paid courtesy calls on some chiefs in the Axim Traditional area.

The visit was to show an appreciation to the revered chiefs in the Axim traditional area for their overwhelming support in partnering the Ministry in celebration of the 2018 Kundum festival.

A statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Friday emphasised that, festival celebrations in the country formed part of the ministry’s mandate to promote cultural heritage and the traditional norms.

According to the statement, Mrs Afeku, who also doubled as the MP for the Evalue Jomoro/Gwira Constituency indicated that the Western Region was endowed with rich tourism attraction and affirmed the Ministry’s commitment to improve on the tourism infrastructure in order to boost the tourism potentials of the Region.

The Tourism Minister said it would undoubtedly help to improve on the socio-cultural and economic improvement of the people in the Region and hinted that plans were also far advanced to give a facelift to the Saint Anthonio Fort in Axim, which was geared towards attracting tourists into the area.

According to the statement, the chiefs on separate occasions expressed their gratitude to the Minister for her strides in trying to boost tourism for the betterment of residents in the Region and the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to support this year’s Kundum festival celebration.

It said chiefs also thank President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for accepting to grace the Grand Durbar of this year’s Kundum festival celebration.

The week-long Kundum festival celebration started on September 1, with a clean-up exercise, a football gala on September 3, Abessa dance parade through the principal streets of Axim on September 4, Quiz Competition and Palanquin ride of Awulae Attibrukusu on September 5, and Axim Kundum Cooking Competition and other cultural activities on September 6.

Other activities lined up include; Marathon, Face of Axim Kundum’ pageant on September 7, Kundum mini Durbar and street jams on September 8 and Kundum Grand Durbar and beach party on September 9.
