There is much hope and believe in this current Black Stars squad – John Paintsil

Former Ghana defender, John Paintsil believes there is ‘much hope’ in the current Black Stars squad as they prepare to participate in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.

The West Africans are in a buoyant mood after drawing old acquittances Portugal, Uruguay as well as South Korea in Group H.

Paintsil, capped 89 times by Ghana and played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, believes the current crop of players can cause problems for teams.

“I believe our current squad is a very balanced one, with youth and experience,” John Paintsil told BBC Sports Africa.

“The two matches they played against Nigeria gave all of us hope that they can go further. We trust that they will do it.”

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Portugal on November 24 at the Stadium 974 in Doha before facing South Korea at the Educatin City Stadium Al Rayyan four days later.

The team will wrap up their campaign with a mouth-watering fixture against nemesis Uruguay on December 2 at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah.

At the 2010 World Cup, Ghana exited the competition following a 4-2 penalty shoot-out defeat to La Celeste after Asamoah Gyan spurned a last-gasp penalty to win the game for the Black Stars in extra-time.
