The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government wants to set the recorded as the first political party to break the eight-year electoral cycle under the Fourth Republic.

There have been several arguments and debates about whether the NPP can retain power after Akufo-Addo completes his two terms in government.

Dr Seidu Alidu, a Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana shared his thoughts on the motion “Can NPP break the 8?” on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, July 18 monitored by Modernghana News.

He believes ‘breaking the 8’ will be a difficult task for the NPP.

“When I look at the current crop of leaders, I tend to have confidence in them. You see some balance of experience in them and there is also regional balance,” he noted.

He, however, stated, “The balance in the current executive is good but breaking the 8 won’t be easy.”

The political expert explains that breaking the eight comes in three parts: how well a party manages its internal affairs and national affairs, and how to stand up to global influences.

“Breaking the 8 is a three levelled hurdled. One, you have to look at the party level, national level and global level influences,” Dr. Alidu asserted.

He adds “There are some of these things you can control and some you can’t.”

Dr. Amoako Baah, another political scientist, asserted that, despite all odds, ‘breaking the 8′ will rely heavily on the party’s unity and the executives’ collaboration with the sitting President.

“The solution is not dependent on them but on how well they can work with the President. They also have to unite the party,” Dr Amoako Baah said on the show.
