Tema, The Tema Traditional Council on Friday reiterated the need for government to appoint an indigene as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
A statement issued and signed by Nii Amarh Sompuno II, Spokesperson for the Council and Tema Shipi Stool Secretary and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Tema, which was a rejoinder to the Tema Central Constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) dated July 23.
According to the statement, the council reiterates that government should not nominate a non- indigene as the MCE saying that, that action would lend credence to the perception that Tema was ‘no man’s land’.
“Further we think that what is good for the goose is also good for the gander, except that government is trying to buy into that unfortunate perception,” the statement added.
The statement said: “We say this because, from Volta to Western Region, all assemblies are always occupied by indigene, so what have we done wrong to be denied such privilege”.
The Council said there were three assemblies on Tema soil of which the Tema Traditional Council was appealing for a slot; “if we are appealing to the government to give us one slot out of the three, what is wrong with that, especially so, when same is accorded to our immediate neighbours like Kpone, Nungua, Teshie, La, Osu, Ga Mashie among others.
He said the Council would continue to accord the dignity and respect to all political parties including the NPP for them to reciprocate that gesture; “We will not sacrifice our birthright to any form of inducement that will be too expensive for us”.
