The Tema Methodist Day Senior High School, MEDASS has launched its 40th anniversary under the theme Quality Infrastructure Development for a Sustainable and Impactful Education: The Role of Stakeholders.
The school is the first second-cycle mission school in Tema that was established to help absorb the increasing numbers of students being churned out in the Metropolis.
The school which was established in 1983 with a population of thirty-three (33) currently has one thousand five hundred (1,500) student population.
Speaking at the anniversary launch, the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Juliana Frimpong said the past forty years, the school has been training and inculcating discipline and good moral values in a good number of leaders in the public space.
“We are still committed to doing the same,” she said.
She lamented that even though the school has grown numerically, it is struggling with significant infrastructure growth.
Currently, the school has two campuses. The Old Site, which is the original campus, houses the General Arts and General Science programmes as well as the General Administration of the School and The New Site which houses the Business and Vocational Studies programmes, together with their special classrooms.
This according to the school authorities is not helping in teaching and learning as teachers have to move from one campus to the other resulting in a loss of contact hours. The lack of classroom blocks is also causing overcrowding in the school.
At the launch of the school’s 40th anniversary, the headmistress Mrs. Juliana Frimpong appealed to individuals, groups and organisations and the government to help support the infrastructure needs of the school as some of the structures pose a danger to the students.
The International President of the MEDASS Old Students Association, Mr. John Aseeph said the old students in collaboration with management are embarking on a GH¢25million project to improve the infrastructure needs of the school.
He appealed to all past students to come on board to support their almer mater.
The Member of Parliament for Tema Central, Mr. Yves Hanson-Nortey pledged his support for the school saying their challenges will be brought to the attention of the Ministry of Education.
