Sheikh Sharubutu tasks Imams to instil moral uprightness in Muslim youth

Sunyani,- Sheikh Oman Nunu Sharubutu, the National Chief Imam has tasked various Imams to inspire and instil a high sense of moral values and uprightness in the contemporary Muslim generation.

He emphasised Imams had divine responsibility to inspire the Muslim youth to be disciplined and be guided by Quranic principles to promote peace, social cohesion and facilitate national development.

Sheikh Sharubutu gave the advice in a speech read on his behalf by Sheikh Armiyao Subib, his spokesperson, at the closing session of the maiden Conference of Regional Chief Imams of Ghana in Sunyani on Thursday.

The three-day conference, attended by Chief Imams, Muslim leaders and scholars drawn from the 16 regions of the country was on the theme “the role of Imams in development”.

Sheikh Sharubutu reminded the Imams of their significant role in the Muslim society, saying, they remained powerful, asking them to help fight corruption in a more proactive manner.

He said the absence of unity remained a huge challenge within the Muslim community, which impeded the work of Imams, and called on Muslims to come together and promote the growth and development of Muslim communities.

Sheikh Sharubutu said Islam required a solid governance structure that would direct the affairs of the religion in the country, and asked the conference to prioritize it for the benefit of the younger Islamic generation.

“We also need a welfare system that would cater for our Imams and deliver them from impoverishment”, he said.

Sheikh Mustapha Ibrahim, Chairman, Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Services, re-echoed the need for for the conference to design a constitution to govern the affairs of Islam.

He said without a constitution, it would be extremely difficult for the National Chief Imam to have a successor, and asked the conference to deliberate extensively, and develop the

constitution.

Sheikh Ibrahim also asked the Imams to be agents of change and use their influences to push the development of the Muslim communities.
