Kasoa, (C/R), July 01, GNA – The Second Lady, Hajia Samira Bawumia, has presented a set of text books to pupils of Opeikuma St.

Peters Anglican Basic School and Akweley ICHODEHs Islamic School in the Awutu Senya East Municipality to improve their reading skills.

The presentation adds up to 68 basic beneficiary schools and about 200,000 books distributed across the country by the Second Lady who urged the teachers not to place them on the shelves and forget about them but to ensure the children read them.

Speaking during the presentation, Hajia Samira said reading had been an essential part of her life and urged the school children to take keen interest in reading.

“Books help you to learn about places you haven’t travelled to. It helps you to learn about societies you don’t know about. It is your window into the world so never mind where you are, never mind that you are here today.

“ If you open a book and you read about something, you can learn and aspire to be something, you can learn about a foreign land and know that one day when you get there you will know what is in there already.”

Mrs Bawumia reminded the students that books had information to improve the lives of everybody and that the more one read, the more one learned.

“So today my task is simple, I have brought you books that I want you to read to improve on your studies and also to let you see what is happening around the world.”

“So, to the teachers and heads of institutions, please these books are not for display, I want to come back and see the children reading the books. Create library space and make some 20 or 30 minutes time to read with them for them to learn about things and improve their skills”, she added.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the municipality Mrs Anita Oboe Love Amissah, on her part, encouraged students to concentrate on their books and not on games and movies, to motivate philanthropists to continue to support education in the region.

She urged students to study to the highest level to become prominent people in society and help change the narrative about the region being one of the poverty ridden regions in the country.

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mrs Mavis Hawa Koomson who accompanied the second lady, commended her for helping to improve the reading skills of pupils in her constituency.
