Sunyani: Nana Kwaku Kumi, a legal practitioner, has expressed concern that the media is not utilizing the Right to Information (RTI) law, despite the resources invested in its enactment. He emphasized that the law facilitates media access to information from public institutions, which is instrumental in their work, yet journalists and media practitioners have not been leveraging it effectively.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Kumi addressed attendees at a forum organized by the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo Regional chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Sunyani, marking the 2025 World Press Freedom Day. The event, themed ‘Overcoming barriers to accessing information in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI),’ highlighted challenges faced by journalists in utilizing the RTI law. Mr. Kumi noted that few journalists attempt to procure information through the law, and many give up when facing challenges.
Mr. Kumi elaborated on the established processes for requesting information under the RTI law, though certain information such as national security, safety, public morality, and public order remain exempt. He stressed that freedom of expression, a constitutional right, empowers journalists to perform their duties responsibly and effectively.
He acknowledged the benefits of AI, such as filtering information, reducing errors, and ensuring accuracy, but cautioned against sensationalism in its use. He warned that AI might prioritize sensational content over public interest content, potentially undermining media pluralism and quality journalism.
To overcome barriers in accessing information in the AI age, Mr. Kumi advocated for a multifaceted approach using diverse search tools, urging the media to familiarize themselves with these tools. He also warned against using AI to generate and spread fake news, misinformation, and disinformation, suggesting that AI can enhance access to information and promote quality journalism for an informed society.
The Very Reverend Dr. Solomon Bruce, Synod Secretary of the Sunyani Methodist Diocese, advised the media against compromising their integrity for political gains, urging adherence to ethical standards.
