ENTEBBE: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has instructed the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) to promptly transfer control of the Kiteezi Landfill to Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, for decommissioning. The directive was given during a meeting at the State House in Entebbe, underscoring the Ghana-based company’s expertise in waste and landfill management.

According to Ghana News Agency, the directive was announced through a press release issued by the Communication Directorate of Zoomlion. President Museveni met with a delegation from the Jospong Group led by its Executive Chairman, Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong. The President expressed confidence in the Jospong brand, particularly praising its expertise in recycling and composting. He highlighted Jospong’s Integrated Recycling and Composting initiatives as a necessary approach to address Africa’s waste management challenges.

President Museveni emphasized the need for African nations to unite in pursuit of s
elf-sufficiency in crucial sectors, stating, “Africa must be a unified force, building its own capabilities and not relying on others for its development. Our self-reliance will drive our success.” The meeting saw attendance from key officials, including Mrs. Florence Larbi, Chief Operating Officer of Jospong’s Environment and Sanitation Cluster, Mr. Haidar Said, Executive Director of Environment and Sanitation, and Mr. Peter Dagadu, Project Lead for Zoomlion Uganda, as well as Ugandan government officials.

The President’s directive follows reports of delays from KCCA officials due to legal concerns over the landfill handover. Earlier, Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Ms. Minsa Kabanda, urged city authorities to proceed with the transfer and engage the surrounding community, with operations expected to begin by March 2025.

Dr. Joseph Agyepong expressed gratitude to the Ugandan President, viewing this as a commitment to addressing waste management challenges through strategic partnerships with
African enterprises. The involvement of the Jospong Group is seen as pivotal in modernizing Uganda’s waste infrastructure, given its successful waste management projects across the continent. This collaboration highlights a Pan-African vision of African companies addressing environmental and development issues, fostering sustainable progress driven by African ingenuity.
