President Mahama inaugurates Kpando water project

President John Dramani Mahama, as part of his campaign tour of the Volta Region, on Monday inaugurated an expanded water supply project in Kpando.

The water project, which used to produce a paltry 130,000 gallons of water a day would now produce a minimum of 1.5 million gallons of water daily to serve the Kpando township, Torkor, Nkonya and Anfoega townships.

A total of 50 stand pipes have also been constructed to make the commodity available to consumers that were not having water projects in their homes.

President Mahama said apart from providing water to numerous communities in the Kpando Municipality, the $13 million project would also provide a floating intake project that would work according to the water levels at the project.

President Mahama said government had also constructed 110 kilometres of pipelines for the water supply to the communities with a booster station that would ensure constant supply of water uptill 2025.

He said although the project had been handed over to the Ghana Water Company for management, government would enjoy a year’s defect period, where the contractor would repair any damage that would occur within the period.

On the availability of water in the entire Region, President Mahama said government had moved availability of the commodity from 39.74 in 2012 to 70 per cent, a figure he added would soar up to 78 when all projects under construction were completed.

He said the Region would in the next few days exceed the national average figure of 76 per cent and called on the recipients to make judicious use of the facility by maintaining it to serve a number of generations.

On the Kpando township development, the President announced that the township roads had been awarded on contract to be asphalted, while the Kpando traffic-Torkor road would also receive attention for construction.

Togbe Ackom VIII, Paramount Chief of Kpando commended President Mahama for development projects such as the provision of water, and the expansion projects at the Bishop Herman College, Kpando Senior High School and Kpando Technical Institute.

He said the provision of buses to the schools and medical equipment to the government hospital and other health facilities in the Municipality were phenomenal.

On the first day of his campaign tour, President Mahama was expected to inaugurate a Community Day Senior High School at Kwamekrom, address rallies at Dambai, Borae and interact with chiefs at Krachi-Nchumuru.
