Accra: President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has assented to the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024 which was passed by Parliament on 29th July 2024. According to Ghana News Agency, a statement issued and signed by the Management of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) emphasized that this landmark legislation, achieved in GSA’s 50th year, strengthens the GSA’s regulatory mandate, establishing a robust, fair, and internationally competitive environment for commercial shipping in Ghana.
The statement highlighted that the new Act empowers the GSA to regulate across all modes of transport-sea, air, and land-to ensure fairness, efficiency, and integrity within the shipping and logistics sector. It also noted that Ghana’s shipping industry is set to benefit from enhanced oversight, which ensures transparency in pricing and fairness in service delivery, establishing the country as a preferred destination for international trade.
To support the implementation of the Act’s objectives, the GSA has embarked on a natio
nwide sensitization campaign. This initiative aims to educate stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under the new legislation. Moreover, the GSA is actively seeking stakeholder input for the Legislative Instrument (L.I.) being developed to facilitate the law’s operationalization, urging all stakeholders to engage in this process for the collective benefit of the sector and the nation.
The Ghana Shippers’ Authority expressed its gratitude to all stakeholders whose contributions were instrumental in shaping this legislative milestone. The statement conveyed, “Together, we have laid a foundation for a resilient, sustainable, and competitive commercial shipping ecosystem that will benefit all parties involved in the shipping, logistics, and broader trade sectors.”
Having been established in 1974 as the Ghana Shippers’ Council and renamed in 1998 to reflect its enhanced mandate, the GSA has been a long-standing advocate for a balanced and thriving trade environment. The statement also encouraged s
takeholders to visit any of GSA’s five zonal offices or Shipper Complaints and Support Units, or to contact them via phone for further information.
