Accra, May 23, GNA – Dr Rohit Kumar C, Consultant, Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospitals, Bangalore, India, had advised the public to engage in physical activities and exercises to reduce the risks of getting cancer.

He defined physical activity as a movement carried out by the skeletal muscles that required energy, and exercise as a subset of physical activities with planned, structured, repetitive and intentional movement, intended to improve or maintain physical fitness.

Dr Rohit, who gave the advice at a virtual workshop organised by the Manipal Hospitals to enlighten the public, especially women, on varied health conditions, as part of its Mothers’ Day celebration activities, said it was very prudent for people to walk more than 10,000 steps a day.

Every individual was also charged to engage in at least two sessions of strength training per week and maintain muscle mass.

Dr Rohit said physical activity could prevent one in eight cases of breast cancer, one in eight cases of colorectal cancer, one in 12 cases of diabetes and one in 15 cases of heart disease.

Exercising the body also lowered the risk of oesophagal cancer by 42 per cent, liver cancer by 27 per cent, lung cancer by 26 per cent, gastric cardia cancer by 22 per cent, kidney cancer by 23 per cent and myeloid leukaemia by 20 per cent, he said.

He said the activity aside from other benefits, also lowered the risk of endometrial cancer by 21 per cent, colon cancer by 16 per cent, myeloma by 17 per cent, head and neck cancer by 15 per cent, rectal cancer by 13 per cent, breast cancer by 10 per cent and bladder cancer by 13 per cent.

He, therefore, cautioned individuals who led sedentary lifestyles and those who drove most of the time without walking, to desist from such life-threatening behaviours and engage in lifestyles that could prolong their lifespans.
