Phase One of Kejetia Redevelopment project nears completion

Kumasi – Work on the phase one of the Kejetia/Central Market Redevelopment project is 95 per cent complete, Messrs Contracta Engineering Limited, the Brazilian firm executing the job, has said.

Mr Jorge Javares de Almera, an Engineer of the company, said the project would be completed and handed over to the government in August.

Addressing a stakeholders’ meeting in Kumasi, the Engineer said work undertaken so far, include the construction of stores, bus terminal, drainage and electrical wiring system, as well as a police post.

The meeting was to brief members of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on the progress of work and the roadmap for commencement of the second phase.

Mr Javares de Almera said work under the first phase have been meticulously done with the view to accommodating substantial number of traders who had been relocated due to the project.

He said the second phase was expected to commence by the end of this year, adding that they have stepped up efforts to complete the work as scheduled.

Mr Osei Assibey Antwi, the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), said the KMA would soon begin validation of traders for them to be resettled in the stores.

He appealed to residents of the metropolis to continue to exercise restraint as the project has created inconveniences to commuters, adding that their concerns would soon be addressed.
