Accra: The Supreme Court has scheduled November 11, 2024, as the date to deliver its judgment on the substantive suit filed by Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin. The case is against the Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament, and the Attorney-General.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Afenyo-Markin initiated the legal proceedings to seek a proper interpretation of Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution. This follows the Speaker’s declaration that four parliamentary seats have become vacant. The declaration was made after three MPs from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus and one MP from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus submitted nominations to run as independent candidates in the forthcoming December 7 parliamentary election.
Additionally, Mr. Afenyo-Markin aims to have the Supreme Court restrain Parliament from making decisions regarding the eligibility of the four MPs in question. The outcome of this case could have significant implications
for the parliamentary seats involved and the broader electoral process.
