Orphanage launched in Kassena-Nankana West District

Mirigu (U/E), Mr Rockson Ayine Bukari, the Upper East Regional Minister, has lauded the effort of Madam Imelda Kumbuno, for establishing an orphanage at the Mirigu Community in the Kassena-Nankana West District to cater for the welfare of children.

The building of the orphanage was put up with the assistance of the Assembly and is presently accommodating 74 orphans made up of 41 boys and 33 girls.

The Regional Minister commended Madam Kumbuno for using her own resources to cater for the orphans by feeding, clothing and taking good care of their health since the year 2000.

The Regional Minister appealed to NGOs, philanthropists and corporate institutions to come to the aid of Madam Kumbuno to enable her cater for the many orphans in the area.

He said his vision for the region which is to reduce poverty and suffering fit into the activities of Madam Kumbuno and gave the assurance that he would work hard to support her realize her dream.

Mrs Emelia Adisa Abdulai, the District Director of Education, said apart from establishing the orphanage and catering for the orphans, Madam Kumbuno has since 2015 been providing school uniforms, sandals and bags periodically to needy but brilliant school children at the basic school level in the area.

Naba Anthony Anonsona Abisa Atasige III, the chief of Mirigu, called on citizens of the area to emulate the example of Madam Kumbuno by contributing their quota to support government develop the communities in the District.

Explaining what informed her decision to initiate such charity work, Madam Kumbuno said she was touched by God and the plight of the orphans to start the project and re-iterated the need for other stakeholders to support her do more.

It is not by any fault of theirs that some children become orphans. As caretakers , chiefs and religious leaders , assembly members, government officials all of us need to support them to develop and contribute positively to national development , she said.

Whilst commending the District Assembly for seeing her good works and providing her with a structure to house the orphans , she said there is the urgent need to expand the facility and indicated that any support in the form of building and learning materials, clothing and food stuff among others would be greatly appreciated.
