GrEEn Project is an European Union/ Dutch embassy sponsored initiative aimed at providing developmental projects compatible with the green environment whilst creating employment for the youth in selected regions within Ghana.

The project which is being implemented by the United Nations Capital Development Fund[UNCDF], Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and SNV is also supported by SOS Ghana as a complementary partner in the provision of employable skills and know-how for job opportunities.

Offinso North District in the Ashanti region is among areas alongside Western Region earmarked for the 4-year program, aims at creating greater economic and employment opportunities for youth, women and returning migrants by promoting and supporting sustainable, green businesses in the two regions.

Speaking to this portal, Hamid Abdul Mumin, trainer and a mentor for SOS explained that his outfit’s duty in the entire project was to offer training and employable skills to beneficiaries among the youth, women and retunee migrants whilst the main agenda of construction being carried out at designated communities identified by the assembly.

He mentioned projects such as culvets, boreholes, bridges among others will be constructed at various communities whiles the training is in effect within a period of 3 months and to move around other communities for up to 4 years.

He added the project also entails educating them on activities that deteriorates our green environment and learning how to protect the green nature for economic advancement.

At the stakeholder engagement held in Akumadan bringing together all NGOs , CSOs Workers Unions and youth groups operating within the district to explain what the project is about and their role in making it a success, Mr. Abdul Mumin revealed that the Offinso North has about 78% percent of its total population living in the rural area with a lot of migrant population from northern Ghana in its ‘Needs Assessment’ report.

The report also showed that the youth are engaged in farming mostly into vegetable cultivation, cashew, cocoa legumes and animals. however, it also revealed that, most of the youth are uninterested in taking up careers in agriculture due to lack of agro-processing industry, this has led to high incidence of migration to Kumasi in search of job.

Green businesses identified according to the report in the district cut across sectors such as Primary Agricultural Production, Agro-waste production, Agro-forestry and recycling of waste, it indicated however that, re-orientation towards change of perspectives on employment in the agric sector on the part of the youth was needed to be undertaken.

Findings from the assessment recommended that beneficiaries be sensitized, encouraged and supported. they must also be encouraged to exhibit commitment and hard work, whilst ensuring less focus on high educational qualifications and avoiding partisan politics in the project rollout.

Although persons engaged to take part in the project will pocket an additional stipend of 12cedis per day, Mr. Mumin said the unemployed youth expressed interest and indicated readiness to participate.

According to him, the first project for the district is the construction of culvert at Mframanfawo.
