Accra: The management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has announced the installation of a new irrigation system aimed at enhancing water flow to the park’s fountains and lawns. This move is part of efforts to beautify the park and ensure its proper maintenance.
According to Ghana News Agency, recent reports highlighted issues such as dry lawns, unkempt washrooms, and non-functional fountains at the park. Mr. Edward Quao, the Acting Director of the Park, acknowledged the challenges with water flow from Ghana Water Limited (GWL) and emphasized the need for a new system to address these concerns.
The newly implemented irrigation system is supported by boreholes and two wells that utilize a reverse osmosis system to treat and reduce the salinity of the water before it is distributed throughout the park. Mr. Quao assured that despite the limited water supply from GWL, the facility is working tirelessly to ensure the park’s amenities are fully operational.
Mr. Quao explained that the final plumbing works are underway for the irrigation system, which has been partially operational since late December. He emphasized the importance of ensuring water availability, especially for the washrooms, which are managed and maintained with the limited water currently available.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency confirmed that the fountains are now operational and the washrooms are clean, with water flowing adequately. Mr. Quao expressed confidence that ongoing efforts would soon restore the lawns to their full greenery, making the park a memorable destination for visitors and tourists.
Mr. Daniel Normann, a Dutch visitor and insurance agent, praised the park’s tribute to the late President Nkrumah, highlighting the educational and historical value of the site. He noted the significance of Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy in guiding Ghanaians and Africans toward development and commitment, reflecting on his pivotal role in the liberation struggle for Ghana and the continent.
